I'm sure this has been covered before, but no luck on the search. I'm wondering what the biggest size rims and tires people have put on a tandem without trailer modifications? Let's see them! The trailer would be an '06 Boatmate Tandem if that helps any.

NAW the rim size is not as critical as the overall tire height look at a trailer and see how much more tire will fit . You can put 18 on most trailers and the overall height will be with in a 1/4 inch if you select the right tires . Over 18 starts looking off because the tire does not fit the radius of the fender .

You want to keep in mind that the more tire you have the more cushion you're providing for your boat/trailer. If you start increasing wheel since you have to start decreasing tire profile in order to keep the tire within the fender, hence less tire to support the load. Like your local "mom" mobile with rubber band tires, hard ride but, you look cool. Chris Get the Grip you Deserve www.wakejunky.com

Chris, that was one of my concerns, along with backspacing to ensure I'm not out past the fenders. I'm looking at 18x8.5's with a 255/55R18. I'm trying to find my tire size calculator so I can determine O.D. of the set up. If they fit, I'd think a 55 series tire should provide ample sidewall. I have 45 series on my 22's and they perform and ride great. Anyone with first hand experience?

Yeah but more axles will help with that. Especially since they do not make super low profile tires for a trailer. Bling first function second (Message edited by Peter_C on February 03, 2006)

Hey Neil, I got your call yesterday. Sorry dude, got boat show going on right now. Here's my tips from what I've learned. This place is gold. http://www.raingler.com/tech/metricTire.asp I run 265/50/20 but I built my trailer with a little taller fender. The malibu dealer next to me has done some 18s with a lot of spare tires on that trailer with like a 35 series tire. It looks like that's prone to problem. You can modify your fenders and step up maybe an inch or two from your current tire size with that. Good luck bro...here's some inspiration. DL

PLus sizing (maintaining the sime diameter of the wheel with bigger rims) is less critical on a trailer since it has nothing to do with speedometer calibration. Blowouts happen more frequently on lower profile tires, so you want a decent amount of sidewall. Having a blowout on trailers is harry enough, why make them more likely right? I would think it would be better to modify the fender to take a taller wheel/tire combo. Eric

I've seen 22's on a mastercraft trailer before. the guy flipped the axle over creating more space. I don't have a pick but he had plenty of room.... He drove a Hummer and had matching 22's on all. I couldn't imagine having 9 22's (4 boat, 4 vehicle, 1 spare) but he did. It was a lake Texhoma (big lake between oklahoma and texas).

Here are a few examples of 18's that I will be doing. The left tire has a higher sidewall, right a lower sidewall (but still not low prof). I am going with the one on the right. I don't do much long distance towing...

Diggs you should use the tire size on the left with a larger rim the tire on the left fills the gap nicely .

yeah not sure yet how I will do it, but will experiment. I like the look of the one on the right, but maybe a slightly bigger rim... will drop an email and verify sizes.

The tire on the right looks best imo. Diggs the black center 18's on the trailer and black center 22's on the Dodge would look sweet!

The tire on the right looks good it just doesnt fill the gap enough , if you went to a one inch larger rim on the left tire it would look just like the profile of the right tire and fill the gap like the left .
