How do I pop off the old ones? Just force?, or is there a trick or tool?
It seems like, with force alone, I'm going to tear the bracket out of the plastic wall.

You can usually stick a flat head screw driver in around the ball joint and push the clip down and it will slide out earlier. Look at the pic on the link. If you look close you can see the little metal clip inside the opening. Push it down a bit and it releases the tension around the ball.

lift up the thin metal flap on the top of the ball ends with a knife/flat head screwdriver.

If u look at that metal ring there it a small cutout/slot for a flathead or knife to get in there and pop that ring outwards away from the shock body. And viola
