in tuesday's outdoor section of the los angeles times there was an article on skimboarding and it's long-awaited rise in popularity. in the article they discussed it's cross-over appeal:

quote:

The crossover bodes well for skimming making a leap out of its California and Florida hubs. Waves and oceans are not required; most skimming is done on flat water. Skimming is showing up inland, on lakes and rivers in places like Scottsdale, Ariz., and St. George, Utah, and boaters are using skimboards for freeboarding on wakes, in which riders let go of the tow rope and surf the wave.

so now you can wakeboard, wakeskate, wakesurf and freeboard?

Sounds to me like they are describing Wakesurfing. I hear you can do it on the Victoria style foam skimboards.

A lot of the new wakesurf boards are shaped like skimboards.

Yes, they use the Victoria Skimboards for wakesurfing. If you have ever seen coverage on the Wakesurfing Championships, I think a majority of those guys use something like a skimboard to wakesurf. The skimboard allows you to do more "tricks", likes shuvs and arials.
