So it is winter and I wasthinking of powdercoating my tower from black to yellow when the guy that customizes and powder coats suggested painting the tower with some grafics in yellow then clear coating it. What do you guys thinks? Also what kind of grafics? Tribal, flames etc what? Also do you think that he is right that the paint with the clear coat will not chip any worse than powdercoating. All your inpput will be really helpful!

anyone else know anything about the painting of the tower with graphics and then clear coating? This guy seems to know what he is talking about but he deals more with cars. Will this hold overthe powdercoating ok?

Josh,

Sounds good. Got any pictures to show the guy thats going to do it? Do you think the paint with the clear coating will be ok on the powdercoat?

JR ~~ To tell you the truth I have not seen it done on a tower, nor do I have pictures of it. I was just throwing out the idea instead of going with the tribal or the flames. I will say to have the boat fully covered if your going to leave the tower on. That clear coat is a "B" with the over spray. I say find a shop that does the powder coating and ask them about the process and what you should look for to get it done right.

Concern: I don't know where you live, but having a dark colored tower in a hot/sunny climate might not be a good idea. I could only imagine how hot my tower would get if it was painted dark down here in FL. But I dunno, I guess lotsa towers are black (malibu?)

Brian,

My tower is already powdercoated black. I just want to kinda customize it with yellow. Other than powdercoating yellow the guys who is doing the work is suggesting doing something in yellow on the black tower with paint and then cover with a clear coat. I don't know how could this will work and I want to customize it too. Any suggestions?

as long as the tower is PROPERLY prepped and they use QUALITY paint read not mako special is should be fine. That being said the paint will not be nearly as strong as the powdercoat to resisting chips or scratches but as long as your careful with it you should be find. Personally I'd either polish the whole thing (I'm partial to chrome)or leave it powder coated.

Yea, I wish my windshield and tower were just polished. At some point they always get banged up. I wonder what it takes to strip all the powercoating.

Tim: Did you ever see the pictures of Joe Mitchels
X2. He removed his tower, racks, windshield ect and had them all striped and polished. It looks awesome.
Its lots of work keeping it polished but it sure looks nice. Get reddy to drop like 5-6 grand.

No, but that seems expensive. I have an alum tower with a matt finish on a sport fish and its very little maintenance. Salt and all.

Mike,
The tower is gonna stay black the guy that is doing the work is just gonna paint some yellow in kinda of a pinstripe around the tower. Not a whole bunch of yellow. Then clearcoat that paint. I just don't know what kind of design to do to make it pop and I don't want something that's t00 much. I'm parthial to chrome to but right now that it a little pricey.
