Here is the kind of shot I really enjoy... my son Barret, taken at dusk. I set the WB to tungsten then used a full CTO gel to correct the color on him. I was holding one corded 580 EX II high to camera left and I believe it was at 1/4 power. I did VERY little post editing.

I think he used a bb. It looks like there's one in the center. I think that's what he said he usually uses.

and another edit of it:

thanks for the input randy.... the first one is pretty plain to me...plus i didn't even finish the chop if you look at the spray coming off the landing.....hoping to find a happy medium with a bit of lomo and making the blue stand out without wrecking the skin tones or making the image too dark is what i'm looking for. here's another go:

hey Randy no probs! looks good. I'm new at this....so playing around with the effects in photoshop is kind of my thing. looks like you ditched the effects and left it more natural... i'll take that as a lesson learned from someone with a lot more experience than me!
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       08-10-2010, 10:57 PM Reply
not tryin' to be a dick but there's not much you can do in post to a shot taken when it's cloudy. and with your edit, the water looks purple and the rider's really red.
Old     (beretta5spd)      Join Date: Jan 2010       08-11-2010, 1:46 PM Reply
ok I was just playing around throwing the effect in there for the fun of it, on my screen the rider is more brown than red and the water is more blue than purple. but i'll take that info to heart.

Milky Way- I've put my scopes and CCD cameras away and have been playing with wide field DSLR shots on an equatorial mount. I'm having difficulty getting detail, but it's a light pollution issue. I'm heading up to dark sky/high(er) elevation in a couple of weeks to spend some time. I hope I can get some good data.

J, isn't it sick that after posting awesome shots like that nobody says anything because they're so accustomed to seeing them from you they expect nothing less?

"Oh, it's just another one of J's ridiculously awesome shots"

I wish I had your talent.
Old     (jjakober)      Join Date: Apr 2002       08-19-2010, 3:11 PM Reply
I don't think it's so much talent, but more of a willingness to fail over and over and not give up till I at least get something half way decent !

But thank you, I appreciate that.

Rob that is so sick!!! What was your exposure time and light source? Well done.
Old     (skull)      Join Date: May 2002       08-21-2010, 2:53 PM Reply
Thanks Randy. That was a 10 second exposure (f18) using a 24-70 and a 5D Mark II. There were these lights on a pole that shined down to illuminate the falls. I got to the falls in daylight and waited until the light balance looked prime. It was actually a cloudy day that day. I took about 30 RAW shots from all kinds of different angles as the sun went down. The only thing that sucked was that the water was blocked off due to a sewage plant spilling into the river because of bad flooding in the week before I was there. So, I had to spend a lot of time in Gimp (I am too cheap to buy Photoshop) to remove a lot of yellow tape and orange barricades there were in this picture. My luck I would visit during a "Bio Hazard" event!

Quick google search for the method gave me these pages:

http://www.devwebpro.com/using-layer...to-with-color/
http://photoshoptips.net/2006/07/25/layer-masks/

In the newer versions it is super easy using the magnetic lasso on the layer mask. I created an adjustment layer to do the B&W and then a layer mask to bring the color back through. On the dog picture I used a red filter on the adjustment layer, play around and see which works best. I'm still very green with photoshop but you can duplicate the results within 5 minutes.

Great shots Randy and Hunter! That first bird shot above is SICK!

Matt/Jarrett- Photoshop is just too complicated and expensive for the extreme small percentage of shots I'd need it. I use Aperture 3 to manage workflow and have every plug-in NIK makes. I can do cropping, sharpening and basic adjustments using those which are really awesome and intuitive products. Nik Viviza (sp?) is so awesome. You can can adjust sky brightness and saturation with a couple clicks versus all of the layers stuff. I very, very rarely take objects out of pictures or get into that kind of photoshop territory. The shot above was an exception just because of unlucky timing on my part. Buying software also isn't anywhere near as cool as buying a 500 f4 or a Gitzo tripod!
