This thing is serious. I think people should be way more aware of what is going on. Good thing for 68 degree temps here in Michigan right now.

Lake Havasu?? Yikes!!

This scares the crap out of me. A week before we were there swimming and hanging out right across from those beaches.

There was another Amoeba related death earlier this month in Texas as well.

Anyone know what the water temp is at Havasu?

According to a couple of websites the water temp this week is 83 in the lake. Shallow protected areas could be expected to be a bit higher. I don't know about where this occurred, but from the news article it happened after a brief swim at a beach the family had used many times. What a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers to the family.

Definitely tragic! I didn't realize that it has already caused 3 death in FL (I pulled the following from wikipedia)

Six cases have been reported in the U.S. in 2007 as of September, all fatal:
*In July, the amoeba caused the deaths of three boys in lakes around Orlando, Florida. Possible causes of the infections include higher temperature and droughts in that area of Florida.
*In late summer, the amoeba caused two deaths in Lake LBJ in Texas.
*In September, a 14-year-old boy was killed by the amoeba after likely having caught it while swimming in Lake Havasu in Arizona.

We wakeboarded Havasu over the weekend last weekend. The water felt like it was in the high 70's.

This is really scary stuff. Ever since I read about it, I've been blowing my nose every few minutes obsessively...

And I thought the only thing you could get from Havasu was an STD.

There were (according to a good source) 6 fatalities in 1991 and 1995 as well. The rest of the years from 1991 to 2003 had 1 to 4 cases per year with some having none. 85% occured in July Aug and Sept. Apparently this was the first in AZ -
