guys-am considering a glastron with a 130 4 cyl volvo/penta engine for wakeboarding. anybody wakeboard with this horsepower? if so- how many people can you cram in your boat and still have enough juice to pull you up? thanks!!!!!

We formally pulled wakeboarders with a 130hp I/O. It was a 30 year old VolvoPenta. No problem with 4-5 people in it, as long we played with the trim and let people sit in the bow.

David,
While the engine would work for it, I would strongly suggest looking for something with a bit more hp. If you need to add extra weight(which you will) it will struggle. I would never buy anything with less than a V8, but if you can't afford one, you can't afford one. At least you will be on the water.

My buddy has a 17' Maxum with a 130 HP engine and while it doesn't pop you out of the water like my 320 HP does, it does pull you out just fine. And that's with weight. He's got a 400 lb sack in the center ski locker, about 200 lbs of sand in the rear, and another 100 or so lbs of sand in the front. He got a 4 blade prop with a better pitch and with the Monster Tower it pulls us out of the water just fine even with a boat full of people.

Keep shopping for something in like condition with a 4.3 six or even a v8. I think you will be happier with it down the line.

for 5 Gs why not go for an old Nautique 2001, the Mastercraft or Supra comp?

David,

I had that engine in my last boat and it did fine until I threw in 3 sacks + 4-5 people. If you don't use ballast it will do fine with say a 17x14 prop.

I moved to a 15 x 15 prop and then it was able to deal with the extra weight quite well. Granted, top speed was only about 27 mph with the newer prop but as far as I/Os go it was great...real easy to hold speed.

David,
Go load it up and test drive it. That will be the best indicator.

thanks fellas. how much is a new prop anyway? Chaun-how was your wake, ok?

My boat's similar to that and i've been using it strictly for wakeboarding for about 3 years now. A new X-star would be nice, but this works and was paid for the day I picked it up (which was a good selling point).

I have a 130 HP I/O but found a deal on an older Malibu for under 5000, we did ok with the I/O and the wake was fun, but a four blade prop really helped alot, my prop was under 150

I just recently bought a boat and while looking I saw plenty of mid-to-late-80's boats with V-8s in pretty good shape for under $5000. I test drove a 4-cyl Penta and I wasn't impressed with the pulling ability but I'm a 6'3" 215lb guy so you might think otherwise.

I went with an outboard due to my budgetary constraints ($3500 - $4000) and have been very happy with it so you might want to keep that in mind. My 120HP Evinrude pulls better than any 4 or 6 cylinder I/O I drove. The wake is nicely formed but a little small. I can still get about 6 ft of air though.

I have a 4 cylinder 135 Hp glasstron and wakeboard behind it everyweekend. The wake isn't real big but it works. Over the forth we had over 1400 lbs of flesh on the boat and it struggled to plane out when pulling a boarder, but it eventually did and worked great. The wake was a lot bigger too. I had never wakeboarded before buying my boat a couple of months ago, now I wish I had a bigger wake making boat.
