They are going to be hard to get when they are released. I tried to get on B&H's notification list and it was full up. Sweet camera though...

D300 set to ship worldwide on Nov. 23rd

D3 set to ship worldwide on Nov. 30th

First 300,000 customers will get Nikon Capture NX 1.3 free (not sure if that's per camera or total).

This is from Nikon Japan. I didn't see the release posted on the US site yet.

thanks

Sales guy from BH that it's closer to the end of Nov.

I went ahead and got on the waiting list too with Ritz.
They usually get a large shipment and send out on the day it's available. No shipping or tax charges is a deal sealer for me.

Now if anyone knows anybody who would like to buy a D80......

I used to work at a camera shop and when nikon does release them, they give very few out at a time. It will still be a while until they are readily available and sitting on the shelf. I'd get yourself on a wait list if you're not already.

Wow. I just read Ken Rockwell's review of the D300. You Nikon shooters are in for a real treat!!!

The D300's LCD is so good that for the first time it might make sense to hold a loupe to it.

In stock at amazon though cameta camera. It might be a little bit before I can purchase one as I just bought a Mako scooter for diving. Hopefully I can buy one before I got to Paris over Christmas.

I'm glad I place my order when I saw it on weds, I rec'd confirmation of shipment this morning.
Called Ritz ( had preordered) to cancel and they haven't rec'd any shipments yet ( as per the CS person).
Then I went back to check the BH site and it's out of stock.

A friend of mine got his already. He somehow got it in the first couple of days they were out. It is pretty darn cool. The preview screen on the back is pretty amazing.

Well I just pulled the trigger on a D300. Beach Camera was the only one that had one in stock at list price. So I paid the $34 shipping. It will be a nice upgrade from my D200. Hopefully I can get some good pictures of Paris France over the holidays. Time to go to Amazon and buy the grip for it, since it shoots more FPS with the battery grip installed??? Weird...

Cliff, I know your stoked with your new camera but you're throwing up some images that technically really don't flatter it much. Since this is a gear forum the technical merits of the images posted are important (more then the content) because you're conveying something about your particular gear. The 2 shots of the girls and the berries above are all pretty soft. Not sure whether it's a focus issue or slow shutter caused motion blur but they're not representative of what the d300 should do.

My suggestion is to shoot the living daylights out of it for a few weeks and experiment with some manual settings along the way. I think you'll start seeing some awesome images that just jump off the screen at you. I'd like to see those.

Hate to say it but Rich is right. I'm a Nikon guy and was really hoping to see how this camera performs. Especially since Nikon seems to be catching up with Canon in the higher ISO speeds.

My first thought when I saw the shots was my point and shoot takes better photos. The last set of photos are soft.

Cliff,

What are you using for processing? Once you step up to a D300 level camera you might as well do it right and get the right processing software.

To start with I would recommend Lightroom (or Aperture if you have the computing power). It does a great job organizing your pics and getting them looking good. It will help you tweak the exposures and makes cropping cake (the last two pics would be better if you cropped out the distractions on the edges). Best $300 you will spend.

Also, I would ban yourself from taking picture on Program mode for the most part. Everything you take should be with either A, S or M. This will force you to think about what kind of picture you are wanting to take. Freeze action sports shot?? Put it on S and set the shutter speed very fast. Want motion blur? Set it to S and slow the shutter speed down. Narrow Depth of field? Put it on A and clamp down the lens aperture.

The down side of such a nice camera is that it costs a little to get the potential out of it. Start thinking 70-200VR 2.8, 17-55mm 2.8 and 10.5 for lenses. Then factor in your lightroom, CS3 and whatever other specialty software you need.

The good news is that most spouses tolerate this (to a point) once you start getting better pics. They forget pretty quickly how much it costs when they sit down and look through the great pics you are taking (even if they are a little soft)

"Cost a little"

Not sure a little. These lenses are expensive but well worth it. Not to be said that great pictures can be had from using the "kit" lens. You just have to know how to use it.

Look at Umali's thread he recently posted recently. The EXIF shows he used a D70. The D70 is a good camera but far outdated to today's standards. His photos are great. Proper exposure and use of Depth of Field. But the biggest part is his composition. Every photo is well thought out and comes out great.
