Okay gentlemen,

New(bie) stereo project kickoff. Step one, replace the aquatronics...who??... exactly.

So, I picked up 4 new 6.5" Sony XSV1642 speakers for inside the boat today. End goal is to add a sub and some tower speakers.

Based on what I can understand from the old posts I was reading, I'm thinking to keep things simple I should be aiming for a deck with 3 preouts, separate bass control, and 4 volts output.

I also want the aux in, MP3, CDR capability with iPod nice to have. I can add the sub next and build out the tower speaker setup later this season or over the winter.

So, given that Canadian options aren't quite as cheap as down south, any issues with the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB as a deck choice under $200? Better ideas in the same price range??

Assuming I get this, is my next purchase an amp/sub combo? Or, can I hook a sub directly into the head unit and do the amp after? Just want to make sure I'm going about this in the right order... and I'm hoping to put off the professional installers until the end of the season. Thanks!!

I doubt you can push a sub with just the head unit... never heard of anyone doing it anyway.

You can most likely get a reasonably priced sub and amp package that will work well together. You might buy a sub box at the same time or build your own, it's not very difficult just takes a little bit of research and a little careful measurement.

our boat we did just a cheapie from walmart.

its a Dual something or another.

RCA in - 2 outs (just Y one to get an extra set if need be) Mp3/CDR/W - BIG Volume dial (very nice) when you hit "close" button it seals up very water tight

Thanks guys,

Think I'm going to stick with the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB - just went on sale today, so it must be fate. Thanks for the tip about the Y cables though, that was going to be my next question

Sub/amp combo will be next. We'll see how brave I'm feeling at that point. Blew a really nice one in my truck a few years ago --apparently the plus minus is a really big deal, lol.
