Someone on my lake has this boat and I was wondering what year it is and if it would be worth it to buy it and put a tower and some other items on it. Speakers and such.

Looks just like the '85 Rider I just bought. that's my guess

J Wilson,
I am thinking it is 84-85 not sure. Emailed the lady today to find out. Do you like it?

That would have been an expensive boat when it was new. Cool boat.

Heck yes I like it. Throw a couple thousand pounds in there, re prop and be good to go. The wake is pretty darn respectable. Real deep hull, open bow plus sweet bow railing?? Are you kidding me? These boats are awesome!

Im going with '83 Rider, first year the Rider came out, and judging by the styling must be one of the first.

BTW, boat is mint!

the rainbow colors make me think mid-80's too.

looks like it is in really great condition.

Do you have access to the boat currently, or can you request another picture? You know you can tell the year by looking at the hull number, right?
Old    walt            10-29-2008, 10:26 AM Reply
The year should be stamped on the stern. It's the last two digits.
Old     (maxx_wake)      Join Date: Sep 2003       10-29-2008, 10:29 AM Reply
I used to have an 83 Rider but it didnt have that long extended peice coming off the sides of the windshield so I am guessing that is an 84 or 85. Be sure to check the floor and stringers for soft spots if you end up getting it.

Have anyone put a tower on one of these? I wakeskate most of the time, but most of my friends wakeboard, so I want to have a good wake for them to ride on. I think this boat weighted right will be a good boat and satify me as well as my friends! here are a couple more pics of the boatUpload

Did you find the year yet?...do what WCW said..VIN# should be imprinted on the transom, probably below the platform...the year is the last two digits as mentioned..

Some family friends had a Rider back in the mid 80's looks identical. Lots of skiing, surfing, and yes, tubing memories behind that thing!
Solid, well built boat. We used to kid him that the upholstery alone weighed more than some of the other boats at the time! hahaha
Looks really clean, could be a great find.

Dude that's f-ing tight I know quite of few guys with 80's model Supras like that and they throw a fat wake with some weight. Definitely inspect the flooring for soft spots. If you need any help give me a shout
Old     (wotan)      Join Date: Jul 2008       10-29-2008, 12:41 PM Reply
Early 80s. The 86's (for sure) didn't have that bow railing.

Same hull as the new Supras means SICK SICK SICK wake if you sack the hell out of it. That thing looks clean. Check the engine bolts and mounts -- if they are solid then the stringers are good. BUY IT!

Hey, thanks guys for all the info. They want like 4000.00 for it. So i am going to try and talk them down a little more since its so old and it never left the trailer all summer. Then I can up grade the the stereo, add tower/racks and it all be under 6,000. I also pry have to remover the rainbow colors and just do that baby blue. Matching tower!!!!

I see a wakeplate/trim down there. Hopefully its adjustable manually and you should be good to go no matter who's riding. Good luck. :-)

4k for that thing is a steal if it's in as good a shape as it looks! If the floors/stringers/motor/tranny check out, go for it!

It's vintage, for sure. But, baby blue on brown could be REALLY nasty and update it quite a bit.

Yea leave the stickers for sure. Check out the floor for soft spots especially by the dog house.

I feel what your saying about the rainbow old school theme. It just on one side of the boat the stickers are peeling pretty bad and I just thought I wippe them out completly. I have a buddy that cuts stickers and such. Maybe I remove them all and then add my own style of rainbow. Little new school with the old!

Also, KRUPP where the F you at. Can't believe you havent put your two cents in yet. I can totally see you rocking your 136 lexy behind this bad boy!!!!!! hahahahahaha

don't want to rain on the parade but if it's been stored outside, it probably needs new floors. or, it will need new floors after you start walking around on them. toss some fat sacs on them and they're doomed if they're original. i'm not saying you can't get a couple of seasons or your money out of it, that;s what old supras do. they weren't built to withstand the years and then get used hard. rain soaking thru the cover has to go somewhere. if it's been taken are of better, you could be in luck.

$4k isn't a bad starting point. don't forget to account for new steering/throttle cables, hoses, prop....it's easy to dump cash at skidim.

love the engine cover and bow rail...i'm going with 1984

Zach, I'm going out this weekend I haven't decided if I'm taking the boat out or the winch but either way I will be riding it's 75 today and supposed to be in the mid-low 70's this weekend so I'll be riding as long as the weather stays like this. I used the roll on bed liner stuff and I love the way it turned out I wouldn't have it any other way

Lear, you know that I am classified as "Legend" status. I may not be the "great one" as a rider, but I can't wait to throw down behind this boat. I am ready to get started on our winter project. In addition, I think I will have a much easier time doing backrolls behind "The Classic," (I may have just came up with the nick name for it) than the bayliner. (Still, much love for the bayliner, it is where it all started.)

previous owner of my boat rhino-lined the teak swimstep... has worked out very well for me, but if i had that boat, I would definately not do that... leave it teak, remake the stock stickers, and a baby blue tower would be rad.

good luck and I hope it all works out for you, seems like a great find

SO i never got a chance to look at the boat last night. They were gone until after it was dark. So i am sure sometimes this weekend I will get to look at it.

I am thinking I am going to run auto ballist. I want to try and put a triangle sack under the seat in the bow and one sack in the back compartment. Then put amps and subs under the rear seat. Does anyone know if this is possible??? Or anyone have any ideas?

"I want to try and put a triangle sack under the seat in the bow and one sack in the back compartment" <----- That's the setup I'm running in mine. I have my sub in the drivers footwell. Are you gonna be using marine amps ?
Old     (zleartsu)      Join Date: Mar 2004       10-31-2008, 9:18 AM Reply
Yeah i got the idea from looking at those threads you gave me! I think it make a perfect wakeskate wake and for my boys that wakeboard I just throw in two more on the sides of the engine. Like I said I havent had a chance to go through the boat or anything. These are jsut ideas. I like to have two subs. 4-6 in the boat and 4 on the tower! thats my idea anyway!
Old     (salty87)      Join Date: Jul 2002       10-31-2008, 11:18 AM Reply
there's lots of storage area under both sides of the dash of these boats. your amps and subs would be drier up there and cable runs shorter. also, the back storage compartment is a fiberglass shell that just hangs on the lip of the hull...above the gas tank. not too much support there...not that i've never put a sac there...your boat (hopefully) , your call.

Monty,
What did you do with yours I saw that you had a sack back there. So I might just double sack it. hahaha who knows!!!!!
I jsut talk to my audio guy and he is jacked. He's been wanting to do a boat in stall so i getting everything at cost and no cost of labor!

looks like you've got a straight bench seat in the back to work with. mine is angled around the engine and sacs don't fit. you can get creative under the playpen too.
Old     (lovin_the_wake)      Join Date: Jul 2007       10-31-2008, 12:51 PM Reply
Oh I was agreeing with salty on the amp and sub location suggestion. As for the rear compartment I removed plastic tub thing in there and used a thick rubber truck bed mat/liner thing and cut it up and lined the whole compartment with it so the bag wouldn't be sitting directly on top of the gas tank and so it couldn't get punctured. I only have 400lbs back there right now and I haven't had any problems with it at all I'm planning on putting another 300 back there this winter

Whats up guys. I had a chance to look at the boat this weekend. Its actually in pretty good shape. It has 677 hours, its an 84, with a 454 in it. They want 4500 solid for it. Its already been winterized so I cant get it out on the water. (worries me)

Monty/salty what size engine do you have in your boats? I have a feeling this boat DRINKS gas.

All and all its not a bad boat, needs a few things but its a 24 year old boat so i understand that. Just wish I could get it onto the water!!!!

Oh and good morning!!!

i agree, even some sort of conditional sale means you wouldn't want to work on it all winter. re-winterizing isn't that big of a deal. shouldn't be a deal breaker, you'd think they would understand to get it sold.

i've got a 454 also but in a 23' boat. i don't think the rider will be as bad but you shouldn't ever have to worry about getting outta the hole.

I have the 351 PCM in mine and it gets way better gph than my older i/o with a v6. I avg a little over a 1/4 tank a day but we basically launch and ride there isn't any driving around to find a spot to ride
Old     (lovin_the_wake)      Join Date: Jul 2007       11-03-2008, 6:31 AM Reply
Why can't you take it out ? Even if it's all ready winterized you can still take it out like salty said you'll just have to re-winterize which isn't bad at all and well worth it if you're serious about buying it
Old     (salty87)      Join Date: Jul 2002       11-03-2008, 6:39 AM Reply
tell them that if the boat runs as good as it looks, they won't have to worry about winterizing it again.

Zach, any update on the boat? It's pretty sweet looking. Rare find to locate something that original.

Do any of you know the if there are any differences between the Sunsport hull and the Rider?

From what I can tell they are the same, other than the fact that some of the Sunsports have a step in their hull/chine for a couple years ('86-'88 maybe?). Maybe it had something to do with the "Skier" designation on some models. Not sure.

Anyway, for those that own and/or have ridden in a boat with a passenger swivel seat, which do you prefer in an open bowboat, bench or swivel seat? I think swivel would be nice to have for less people in the boat / cruising. Bench obviously for riding with more people. Just curious to get your opinion. The bench on the rear of the dog house / engine box of Supra Rider is definitely a nice to have.
