About a week ago I was out wakeboarding, whipped into a turn and went into a powerslide. Feeling good, glassy day, then all of a sudden I open my eyes and am reaching for the surface of the water.

I was wearing a vest, not cc approved tho. Anyway, I was in a whole load of pain, mostly in my back but I was super dizzy and nauseated. Thought I was just being a wuss so I rested for a few then went wakesurfing. Everything seemed alright for the most part.

Then a day or two later I started having dizzy spells and the nausea came back. They weren't very frequent and never lasted very long so I just figured it would be something that would just go away. It's now saturday (happened last thurs.) and the dizzyness is getting worse and I'm finding it more difficult to eat.

Keep in mind, I have no health insurance. So if the doc is just going to tell me "yup, its a concussion, you just have to ride it out and it'll be fine" then I don't want to waste my money. I figure people here have probably experienced this before and I am wondering how it went, if I should be concerned, and at what point do I cave in and see a doc?

You are getting worse as time passes, That is scary. It's your brain so it's up to you, but I think it's worth the $ to get it checked out for sure.

I've never experienced what you are going through, but I took my husband to the ER yesterday because he caught a heel edge and couldn't remeber a thing for a half hour or so. (He couldn't even remeber that he actually rode that morning) Turned out okay, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Hope you are okay!

The fact that your symptoms are worsening a week later definitely warrants you going to see a doc. Normally a concussion gets as bad as it is going to get within the first three days or so. Anytime you have a significant thump to your head that causes you to lose consciousness you should go get checked out. Whatever you decide good luck with it and hope you feel better

Wow, I would go get checked out, I have had concussions before but not as bad as this. Do you have insurance? If so, there is no big deal with getting checked out to at least find out for sure. Head injuries are nothing to mess around with. My fiance is an RN in the icu at a children's hospital in this area and I hear the horror stories that come with head injuries. I'm not saying it will be anything more than a concussion, but I would go to make sure. I put off going to the hospital or Doctor's office whenever possible, but with head injuries I wouldn't do it. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck, hope all is well. Keep us posted.

After you get that dome checked, I would make a call and get health insurance today-now is actually a good time. If you don't have the dough, check with the state and see what programs they have.

* sorry above about asking if you had health insurance, I just reading what you had said again and realized you stated you do not have health insurance. I would still go to see a doc. It's been this long and it's getting worse is kind of scary. Obviously it's your ultimate decision. Again, good luck, hope you are okay. Keep us posted.

Of course the safest thing to do is go to the doc. Getting someone else to give you different advice (i.e. don't worry about it) is irresponsible in this age of lawsuits. I will, however, give you anecdotal evidence from myself, and you can do with it what you want.

I have had one concussion where I did get knocked out. Went to the doc, and was told 'You have a concussion. Don't do anything strenuous for 3 weeks'. Oh yeah, here's the bill.

I have had 4 concussions since then. Although none involved a loss of consciousness, several were severe. My left pinkie was numb for over a year. I consulted a head trauma specialist, who said that to be safe I should never board again. I quit riding that summer and kept impact sports to a minimum for 6 months. 2 years later I've taken a couple of diggers and there is no residual effects, so I think my noggin' has recovered. On my first bad concussion, I will say that time only improved matters, not worsened them. The argument could be made that your brain is still swelling, indicating a continued problem, and ignoring it could be detrimental to your health. I could be wrong, but I think you are friends with Murray. Call in a favor and get him to hook you up with his head doc (as I'm sure he has one after that spill he took a couple years ago on the blind judge).

you need to get to a doctor and get a cat scan IMO post concussion syndrom is no joke. I had a concussion snowboarding and I can't remeber most of the day that it happened. But I do remember the nurse at the hospital telling me a story about a nurse who worked there that had a small concussion snowboarding then he went wakeboarding the next day and ended up getting a worst concussion and dieing on the scene....maybe your situation isn't this serious but at the minumum I would take a month off from contact type sports

Definitely see the doctor. The problem with concussions is they can lead to issues like stroke and swelling in the brain, especially if you boink your head again too soon after the first time. You can't do much in life without your brain.

I had one about a month ago. Insurance didn't pay anything so I footed the whole bill. It cost me $650 to get a cat scan. A price I was willing to pay to make sure I was going to be all right.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. There is this place in town called ASAP clinic that's for people w/o health insurance and they're supossedly pretty affordable. I'll head over there on Monday, and I'm signing up for health insurance through work tomorrow. Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate it.

Dude...I wouldn't wait until Monday as this is something that can progress. Sure it may be something as simple as post concussive syndrome; however, you need to have a CT scan to verify. As far as the clinic, I wouldn't go to a walk in type of clinic unless you know they have a CT scanner. Good luck...

Trust me.....get checked. Sounds like a pretty good thump you took. The ones that make you sick feeling are pretty high grade. The thing is...once these bad boys start, mild ones are very easy to get. I've had many....various things over the years and just took another mild one this summer. My brain has to be saying "WTF dude?" by now!

Did you loose concousness? If you did not loose concousness or hit your head it could be sonething else. Maybe bleeding in the head or somewhere else. Maybe gastrointestinal. DO NOT GO TO A CLINIC. Go to the regular emrgency room. Clinic may not have the right equipt. or personel. If it was me i would go to the largest hospital during the day. Possibility of getting a better deal b/c more docs around and easier too get hold of. Best bet is around 7-8 AM in the morning..

Beth,
Your symptoms should not be worsening from a simple concussion. Hopefully it will work out OK, as it sounds like just a good slam, but you need to get it looked at. Worst case scenario, you could have a small bleed, which is the type of thing that worsens. I just discharged a patient who simply banged his head in his garage against a cabinet, and he thought nothing of it... well, it caused a slow bleed, so a week later he was ungergoing emergency brain surgery to save his life. I doubt this is the case for you, but it's not something you want to play games with. My advice is to complete the insurance application and THEN go to the doctor on Monday, that way hopefully you can avoid having to mention it as a pre-existing condition (which could limit your coverage).

I know it's hard when we're students, strapped for cash, etc., but people have NO BUSINESS wakeboarding or doing other similar activities without health insurance. Hopefully for Beth this will just be a wake-up call and not something more serious.

I have good experience with this so please listen. About 5 years ago I crashed HARD coming down from a raley and caught my entire TS edge, face planted about 10' in the flats, and was knocked out cold. I woke up in the boat once my friends pulled me in and I had "temporary amnesia" according to the doc because I didn't know what day it was, what time of the year it was, etc. I only knew who my friends on the boat were but was very dizzy and disoriented. About 2 hrs later I realized that my rotator cuff was torn too. I went to the hospital about 4 hrs later and they said that with a concussion, after the first few hrs, there is nothing they can do for it. You just have to be careful so you don't have any more head trauma. But since then, I've had seizures and I'm now on anti-seizure medication. This is what you need to be careful for. If you are having dizzy spells days after the accident, or are waking up out of a dead sleep completely confused and disoriented, you should see a neurologist because you might have done permanent damage and need to get put on meds to control it.

Increasing nausea eh? I actually had a similar patient a few years ago. She slipped and bumped her head and then a couple of days later started having increased nausea and was having a hard time keeping things down. Turned out she was pregnant. You should get a pregnancy test..your going to get one at the ED anyways.

Hope you recover well.

Later

Seems to be it as simple as you should go to the doctor if it hurts.....it's not getting better....or you're worried about your injury for any reason.

People on here can't tell you how YOU feel or give you a diagnosis. Even the people posting with "similar" injuries could have had something totally different that what could possibly be wrong with you.

You're talking about your head. I see you have no insurance, but seems to me like it might be more important to not take a chance rather than save a few bucks.

Good luck with your recovery. Hope everything turns out OK.

Thanx again everyone for all the feedback. Went to the clinic and she basically said what all of you have already said, I need a CT scan and she couldn't do it. Brightside, she didn't take my money so that was nice of her. I just signed up for health insurance so I am covered as of yesterday. Good news, I know for for sure I'm not pregnant, cause its not physically possible. ;-) Going to the doctor hopefully early tomorrow so I can go through the steps of getting the brain checked out. Thanks again everyone for all your support! I'll keep you posted on what the verdict is.
