Winching with a 5hp Briggs?

Just pulled my 5hp Briggs and Stratton from my old Go-Kart and started scheming winch designs... Before I invest any time or money I wanted some feed back on how the 5hp will work. I know most folks are runnin 6.5 - 8.0s. I'm not too worried about deep water starts because we can usually find a starting dock.... Any feed back or places to find parts will be appreciated.

it will work fine, especially with a TAV. the main winch i ride behind is a 5hp b&s with a cc and it deep water starts me and my buddies.

Anyone got a good place for parts or a winch building for dummies website? I have no clue how to build one but I'm pretty handy with hand tools, welders, and shiz... and I have tiny-bit of engineering knowledge as well.

Other than your metal material and your TAV, you can find just about the parts you need at northern tool. You will also find this link very helpful as well!!

5.5 hp B&S works fine, just make sure you have the gearing dialed.

Our first winch was a 5.5 without a torque converter. It worked fine but took a little time to get up to speed. Our new winch runs with an 8 and a torque converter and you can dock with this one. We needed faster starts for tight boat show setups.

Luker... No problem man...I think everyone should have a winch! I finished building mine a few months ago and its AWESOME!!!! If you have anymore questions along the way just shoot me an email and I'll help you out as much as I can.

How do you fix the axle ends into the pillows? Is it those little "C" ring clips that sit in a grove on the axle or something else?

To answer my own question, the pillow blocks have set screws build in.

I've made some progress from the spool to starting the frame. Lots more design, welding, painting and testing to do but check out the progress here:
