Going to Maui on the 31st, just wondering where a guy might find some friendly waves on the Island, where the locals might let me take a set. I already know about respecting the locals and there beach. Not that experienced in the ocean. I've done it before, but not on this Island, just don't want to go to the hard core beach's where if your a visitor the you might not ever catch a wave. Thinkin about goin to Paia to meet some locals with the wacky tobaccy, and tryin to befriend some of these guys, so I might have a chance at some waves. Chime in if you know anybody there or have been there surfing.

I just returned. Right now there are pretty few surfable waves at all. THe big swells come in from the north during the winter months. This year the southern summer swells have been very very small. Hopefully that will change before you get there or you might struggle to find anyone surfing at all. If you are not that experienced, then the 2-3 footers on the south shore near Lahaina will be great for your first attempts.

Paia is an awesome beach but I also like Big Beach had tons of fun there too.

As talltigeguy suggested, the south shore sounds like your best bet. Lots of fun breaks near Lahaina. Hoo'kipa near Paia is a nice north shore break where you can scope out some action. This place was always pretty crowded when I was there, but there were always surfable waves. Just be considerate where ever you decide to paddle out. Paia is a cool little town... definately a high probability of scoring something to put in the air in Paia.
