Has anyone ever shaped their own wakeboard or wakeskate from foam? I'm thinking about shaping a wakeskate, and if it goes well, then shaping a wakeboard.

I'd like to hear of some of the do's and don'ts from past experiences.

Rene, Where are you going to do all this? Sounds cool if you have the facility and equip.

Rene,

Contact Tony Carreon. He shapes wakeboards.

Thanks Arun. I've talked to TC, but I wanted to hear from others also.

J-Rod, I'm going to do it in my garage. I'm doing for fun personal use, not to sell or anything.

Mark, I have all the necessary shaping tool.

I'll keep a detailed process log and picture gallery as I make it.

Maybe someday I'll be on the Discovery channel making theme boards like Orange County Choppers.

All I need is someone to play the part of grumpy ol' Paul Teutul Sr. hahaha

Where do you get the foam to do the shaping? I've always wanted to try it but don't know where to get the foam or anything.

Rene, in my past I did some surfboard shaping. One of the most important parts is the room you are using. You need to have a shaping bay. A room that is walled of in a rectangle shape and squared. On the long walls you will need shelves on each side that are pretty close to the height of your shaping stand, with florescent lights under the shelves. The lighting is very important, as it helps you see the line you are shaping and makes it much easier to see if it is continuos etc.

If it is anything like surfboard shaping you will throw away many blanks before you can get a usable board. I stress usable LOL not high performance. But even a usable board is cool when you shaped it yourself, and wakeboards might be a little more forgiving, do to the fact that you are being pulled by a boat, as compared to having to paddle into a wave, where even subtle thickness "volume" changes make a huge difference, especially in small waves.

You should try to go check out a surfboard shaping place, they probably have some near Ocean Beach or for sure in Santa Cruze.

As far as glassing the board, that is not to hard to do, or compared to the shaping of one at least. But still takes practice, especially on the sanding part. Not taking to much of the glass off.

As far as getting the required materials I have no idea exactly what type of foam they use for wakeboards, and how easy it is to shape.

Good luck though!

By the way, some surfboard shapping places will let you rent out a bay for a specific time. Might be a good way to go to see if you really want to do the necesary things to build your own. Or if you just want to do a couple of boards for fun, which sounds like might be the case.

Here's a link to TC's post where he created his own board. I'm trying to find out from TC where to get the materials. http://forums.westsiderider.com/index.php?s=7dda9c5f6d0f32a46925530df47e1a79&act=S T&f=9&t=1854&st=0&#entry3428
