that is an aligator Gar there are tons of them here in Houston area. they love bayous, small streams. We used to catch them growing up. They put up a pretty good fight. The biggest one we caught on a rod and reel was only 5'6" though. That one is alot bigger. Supposedly they wont bite humans but I dont want to be the first. Nothing more spooky than falling and waiting for the boat to pick you up and one of these guys bigger than you rolling next to you so close you can touch it. Happens all the time........

I have been swimming with the alligator gars in lakes in east texas. They have brushed up next to my leg before, and did not bite. I did jump straight up out of the water (12 deep water) and get the heck out since it scared the crap out of me. I don't like them, and leave them on the bank to die, but they don't keep me out of the water either, unless they swim up to me to give me a kiss, then I am outta there.

i'd have to say that i kind of agree with david burns. looks like the fish is a lot closer to the camera. also notice no blood drips below the fish on the ground. judging by the size of the snap and the rope, probably closer to a 2-3 foot fish.

They don't bite. I've stepped on a few at the duck lease. They'll sure give you a good scare.

I don't know what the hell that fish up there is, but there are other fish in the Sacramento River that are close to, or the same size. Here's a little dead baby we saw a few months ago.

You people are funny, everytime an amazing photo (Chard Sharpes big air for example) is posted everyone seems to automatically think that its not real or Photoshoped. I just laugh when people try to analyze it and are also so close minded. Those alligator gar can easily reach 4-6 feet, I seem them in old photos all the time in a lot of the small Texas towns around here. I see them all the time in my local lake.

Just remember to stay off the Delta this weekend! Especially Saturday between 9am and about 3pm, Gar are most agressive between those hours. (Message edited by aircanada on August 10, 2004) (Message edited by aircanada on August 10, 2004)

The rod and reel world record alligator gar weighed 290 lb, and the trot line, or unrestricted division record weighed 302 lb. Both were caught in the Rio Grande River back in the 1950s, and measured a little over 7-1/2 ft in length. No that pic was not photo shopped! Those things get huge This was taken from this web site http://www.earthwave.org/gar2.htm

Aircanada, make sure you post that on signs around there, you don't want anyone to get hurt. It's great to see someone looking out for others like this.
