plexiglass sub box?

has anyone ever built a sub box out of plexi glass i have seen the expensive boss ones and they dont seem to be that complicated. im just not sure of the chemical weld that holds it together

What's up Indo??? I can't recall what the name of the stuff that is used is for plexiglass seams is but I've used it before and it is pretty strong. Basically it melts the pieces together at the seams and makes it one piece. It is pretty easy to work with and I would think that a box like the one boss has that they are charging an apparently rediculous price for could be made for under $100 easily maybe much less.
One thought on a plexiglass enclosure that would annoy me is unless your making a free air box your probably going to want to put polyfil in it and that sort of defeats the purpose of having a see through enclosure.
I've never heard a sub in a plexiglass box before and I'm curious as to how they actually sound, compared to a box made from MDF or Plywood. I wouldn't think that 1/4" Plexiglass is nearly nowhere near as dense as the wood and would sound quite different.
Anyone out there know any better on the sound difference?

thanks for the info ken. i would also like to hear from someone about the sound quality. i was just thinking of how much better plexiglass would be in a marine enviroment because mdf is like a sponge once it gets damp.

Build it out of marine grade ply wood or You can get 1" pvc plastic sheets which you can screw and glue. The ply is the cheapest option.

those plexi boxes are realy good looking and expensive as indo said. In Boss's defense, there is a little bit of labore involved beyond cutting the squares and glueing them togther. Not sure if it is enough labor to justify the cost or not. They have a beveled(sp) edge that definately gives the box a smoother look. The holes for the wire connectors, are all pre-drilled and the inserts are put in place. The speaker holes are also pre-drilled and inserts put in. Like I said, not sure if that and anything else that they may do justifies the cost or not.

Bill, Seriously.. I bought an S12L7 without the box for $189+shipping. Your selling the 12" Boss sub with the same exact speaker for $750 on your website which means they are selling that box for almost $500. Granted your your markup and their mark up is involved but, that is completely rediculous. I could train a monkey to pre-drill some holes and bevel some edges. As good as boss stuff sounds it is way... way over priced.
Indo you can probably buy that box empty from boss but I'd be willing to bet it would cost you atleast $300.00. I looked into buying empty canisters and the B-530 canisters were still like $700.00 empty.

Ken....I can't agree with you more. You can buy the plexibox without the speaker, but they are real close to $300. Boss is high priced, I admit it, they admit it. I even ask them about it one time. But.....they have nice stuff. You pay for quality and warranty I guess. The one on my site for $750, not sure what that could cost if you broke it all down. But that is MSRP and not MAP.

I wish someone would come out with Boss quality, and wakedesign pricing. That company will kill it!!!

I contacted a local performance car stereo shop who builds competition quality boxes. They said they would custom fit a waterproof plexiglass box to an enclosure in your boat for around two to three hunge. If you have a real good car stereo place, real good meaning competition winning, I would check with them.

INDO-I made two sub boxes.Make sure you use ACRYLIC though, it is more dense.I screwed the panels on mine together,but it took a lot longer than gluing i imagine.It was $350 in material,but i had some subs that required a big ported box so it would be alot cheaper if you had better subs.No filler,just two ported, 2 c.u. box and they hit hard!!!

ive always heard that plexiglass obsorbs alot of the bass but i've never actually heard a system w/ a plexi glass box. i'd like 2 c sum though.

www.audioformz.com has colored, sealed fiberglass sub boxes. Not a bad price either for the '02 models. Now I just have to figure out where to put it. Anybody got ideas?

I have an audioformz sub box and am happy with it. It is extremely solid and well built. I originally placed it under the passenger seat but wanted more sound. I now have it behind the drivers seat and it rocks! I have a JL sub in the box.

Have you ever thought of putting it in front of the drivers seat? I was looking at the dimensions, seems to be pretty big, do you think it would fit under the dash or maybe screwed into the inside of the drivers side wall? Let me know what you think.

It really depends on your boat. My battery is in there so I would have to move it. I still may move it there. As for mounting the box on the wall I would not suggest that, for it is very heavy and may damage the wall. The fiberglass box looks great and can easily withstand the elements.
I point the sub away from the sun to avoid sun damage to the sub.
