Here is a picture of my batteries like they sit. I'm getting two new batteries and when I went to take them out I was pretty confused. I was under the impression that having a positive go to a negative (the green line in the picture) would put out 24 volt which I don't think I want. Also, I can't figure out what the loose red connection (in the green box) might be for. If anyone could help me out, it would be much appreciated. Should I leave it setup like this or is there a better way?

pos-pos, neg-neg, is what you want ( 12 volt system) I have no idea what the other power lead is? Stereo maybe?

you DO NOT want to hook your battery's up in series ( 24 volt) you will fry electronics

If those were wired in series they must be 6 volt batteries. Just as Sam said set them up parallel. That looks like just a dead wire.

If they are 6V batteries, you want them in series. Pos - Neg - Pos - Neg. That will make a 12V system. I can't tell by looking at them what they are.
