I just got a call from Phillip Soven who asked me to post the following information on wakeworld: Phillip has broken his wrist attempting a raley to blind on his home lake. The handle went up his arm and was ripped out when he fell. Apparently it is a clean break and it will need several weeks to mend. Defending his title at The Masters is out, along with the Liquid Force trip to Lake Powell. He is hopeful to ride by the time the second Pro Tour stop hits Minnesota, and will at least leave the dock in order to get the points towards the Tour race. Anyway, he says he reads wakeworld but doesn't post much. He figured this would be the best way to tell people all at once. Outside of that, Phillip and Murray had an incredible head-to-head heat at the first Pro Tour stop, and I hope both he and Murray can get back to form and get back on the water as soon as possible.

I am developing a Safety Release for preventing damage from these kind of falls. It will be like a Trick Release for Trick Skiing, but will mount on the tower. Should have working prototype within 2 weeks. The first one will be built for my MC X-9. The observer will have a tag line to pull to release the rope if the rider falls - hopefully before the rider hits the water. If you have comments or ideas - rider@boarditup.com Karl DeLooff (616) 530-0442

Safety release is not a bad idea but probably wouldn't have helped Philip. We use them for show ski and the application is solid. It would be good to have in case a rider ever got tied up in one after he crashed to keep him from being dragged. I have seen a few riders put their arms through and even their chin but they have never been caught up in one. By the time it is released the damage for a wakeboarder is done. Not saying it is a bad idea just that it won't prevent most of the injuries in wakeboarding that may occur from getting arm stuck through handle. How can you be healed in time for MN? Impressive. How is brother Rob doing?

I put my head through a handle attempting a raley. Luckily i was a new rider and was using an old slalom line which broke. I surely would haave been dead if using a wake line. So i think your release is a GREAT idea. I wish my Prob with knee was as simple as a wrist break, God luck.

Hey everyone I do not usually post things on here but i thought i would clarify what happened. I was trying a blind judge and landed wrapped. When I went to grab the handle with my back hand which was actually the leading hand since I was landing switch, the rope got slack from to much speed and the rope part of the handle actually wrapped around my left wrist. The initial tug just pulled me off my feet to my back but the second tug is the one that did it and dragged me for a short time. Once the rope tugged the second time the damage was done. I will be going into the orthopedic surgeon on Monday to find out exactly how long I will be out. The x-rays showed I have a chip fracture of the ulner bone and possibly a chip fracture of the scaphoid bone. If that is true it could be as long as 10-12 weeks. I am unsure as of now, I will update on Monday when I find out.

Wow, thanks for the clarification. That does not sound simple and not fun. That release may have worked if you had a good spotter. Good luck

Not much, but I am sure there would be some discomfort. I was just wondering since he is a new user as of today. That seems like a long post for just one hand. Oh well, maybe I am over evaluating everything

You can totally type with one hand. A number of years ago I broke my arm (full arm cast, from hand to upper arm) and I had to type all of my class assignments up. It sucks, but it can be done! Good luck with the recovery!

Yeah as said, the question mark handle shape is flawed, it could get cought somewhere much worse, like around your knee. Imagine that, then you'll be screwed. Get well soon froggy.

Whats up everyone. Just thought I would give an update GOOD NEWS. I went to my orthopedic surgeon that i have been going to for a few years now because of my frequent tissue tears in my knee and fiber tears on my right knee and of course other injurys over the years. The radiologist at the hospital misread the x-ray and told me i would be out for up to 12 weeks. I had it re X-rayed and examined my the orthopedist. I have a crush injury where the rope tightened the 5 bones in my hand got crushed together and became really tender but not broken i may have a small chip but nothing big. I am able to ride pretty soon with it its just how much pain i can put up with it will heal the same. I will not be attending Masters still I am not in riding condition. I am still wearing a splint on my wrist but I am making good progress. I think i will hopefully be riding by the time the next tour stop comes around at almost but not quite full strength with somewhat minor pains. By the way in Qatar I got food poisoning and got sick when i woke up i was sweating and twitching but you have my word i will not be having another one of those incidents. later

Scope- He probably shouldn't that fast but he wants to stay on tour. You can't really damage it after surgery (Dr says) it just needs to recoup from the surgert itself.

I know he will be back to 100% in no time. I had some pictures of Austin I kept sayin I was going to send you of him working on the double back roll at the Projects but hurricane Katrina flooded them out. He ended up having to get stiches that day on the cheek for his attempts but he was all over it. That same day he and Lidberg had a little switch tootsie roll competition to see who could stick one first and Austin stuck his 3rd attempt. This was 2 years ago, I can't imagine how much he has progressed since then.

Thanks everyone for the support. I will be trying to get riding again within the next few days. I will be riding in Minneapolis. I am not sure if i will be 100% but I have been riding for a long time this isn't the first time I have had to ride with an injury. About the knees that is very true over the years my right knee has been having multiple minor tears and pulls but nothing to major yet. It has been 11 years since i started wakeboarding and this is the first time I have gotten injured by the rope so i dont think it is anything to worry about changing handles and stuff what happens, happens not a big deal. Last thing someone said I was 15 actually I will be 17 on June 4th in a few days. Thanks again
