The Delta season isn't over. We've just had a couple weeks of early winter-like weather. We normaly add some neoprene mid October, full wetsuit come November, and drysuits from December through February.

This year I'm planning on more dirtbiking and snowboarding however.

You will find some of your best water in the winter time on the delta, so yes its still glass!

Tyler-
I know several guys, including myself, who ride the delta year round. I personally like the off season because of the lack of boat traffic and glassy conditions. The water will bottom out at around 50-52 deg - but is very tolerable with a dry suit.

dry suit? That is tolerable with a good wetsuit.

We were out a few days ago. The water was 63 degrees. There was a little wind but ridable. We only saw a few boats.

Garret-
Props to you if your riding Jan/Feb with a wetsuit. Even if I was warm while riding, I don't think I would want to give up the comfort of getting back into the boat and taking off the dry suit and having nice dry/warm thermals to hang out in.

I hate drysuits. I'll take the intial, cold water bite over the bulky drysuit

We ride the Delta prety much year round- less in Dec. and Jan.
Right now it's neoprene tops. Wetsuits starting late Oct., Spring suits in mid March. The worst part about Winter and Spring is the debris, some of which is not kind to boats.

I rode the delta last weekend and Im still in trunks. No wetsuit here until probably late November and then its only a spring suit.

Water was up to 70 monday nite in spots and 65 on tuesday nite. Kinda depends on how warm the day is and how much sun.

Last year wasn't a very good example. With all the storms and rainy weather the water was unusually high, carrying lots of debris and the winds rarely died. In the past though, the winter has been my favorite time of year. Usually glass all day and totally quiet. I usually nixx riding during december and january, sometimes into febuary because of the air temps. Water during those months has a tendency to drop into the 40's which, IMO, is too cold. Other than that it's usually in the 50's and is totally comfortable in a wetsuit. Definitely a heater in the boat is killer and some sleeping bags/beers will keep you comfortable all day.

Drysuit for me last sunday and monday....it was nice and comfy.
I don't mind it too much since I'm not a great rider anyway.

The fall can be a very enjoyable time on the Delta. The water is still somewhat warm and the winds tend to be calmer.

It is not unusual for a cold front to move in and make you think the season is over and then have it warm up again a week later. I am still planning on going out a few more times.

we'll be out on the delta either sat (7th), sunday (8th) or both. we usually won't wrap up our boating season until end of october.

Geoff, still got plenty of room. Give me a call either tonight or tomorrow. 415.286.6750 We usually go out around 9 or 10 but lately its been closer to 10 since its cooling off.

went out today from wimpys. the water was a little cold, but not enough for a spring suit, just a neo shirt. great day, 83 degrees outside!

but those damn fishermen are more than happy to clog the channels (at least they went home in the afternoon).

hmmm...never had any problems w/ fishermen out there. they've all been pretty cool and have actually stopped to chit chat w/ us.

yeah - it was a fun obstacle to Poke off yesterday - i hope they get it out though - must be doing some serious damage to the wildlife that calls the delt home.
Did anyone notice the black X-9 yesterday filled with people? ROOKIE OF THE DAY AWARD!!!!
Pulled up in front of my rider and me personally four times, and decided to take the left U-turn midway and almost collide right in to me.
If anyone has a pick - post it - for future beware warnings!
SO Disheartening how 1 idiot can ruin such a beautiful day of riding!

We were checking that thing for dead bodies saturday afternoon. The wife was ready to jump out of the boat and swim in the other direction when I started getting close to it! (LOL)

I hope they get it out of there soon as it will probably disappear at high tide and eat someone's prop.

There used to be a submerged car on grant line as well, did they ever get rid of that?

So you guys who run your boats into the winter, how do you protect the engine from freezing temps? I keep mine under a canopy but not indoors and we get freezing temps at night sometimes as early as Halloween.
Old    C.I.E..... Evan (guido)      Join Date: Jul 2002       10-09-2006, 11:20 AM Reply
Rich, I don't think they ever got it out. It'll be interesting to see how long that thing sits there. It's a pretty new car, so there may be some insurance involved. We rolled by one crew that was taking pics with someone in the drivers seat. It was pretty funny.

Miguel-yeah, the guy with the X9 was definitely a rookie. There was also some cowboy out there in a X15 that was ruining the water with some killer powerturns in Vics. I didn't even know it was wide enough to power turn there, LOL.

Anyway, good times. I was amazed at the number of boats out in the afternoon. If was like a mid-summer afternoon. Rollers going in every direction.

Not much freezing here on the Delta, maybe a few times in late dec or jan.

I was in the drivers seat when you guys rolled by. We were done riding for the day and decided to have some fun and check it out. Probably stolen, there wasnt much left of the interior, no stereo, speakers, deck lid, and no stering column cover. You could also see where the top had been cut to get into it. The hood wouldnt open so i dont know how the engine looked.

Was that a Toyota? Kinda looks like a Solara. There was a similar car (looked like a late model Camry) bashed into someones gargage door on Bixler with the side smashed in, right across from the post office. At was there about an hour ago.

I rode in a new boost dry suit this weekend. Usually I have problems with my more advanced handle pass trick. But I was sticking them no problem. Tulloch is a little colded then the delta. Temp gauge was reading between 59 and 61.

The new boost is super thin and nice to ride in if anyone is looking a for a dry suit. BCP MIke

I can't believe you guys are rockin' dry suits. Chris always cracks me up with that. I was in trunks with a top this weekend and I'm a self proclaimed sissy. For some reason I just like the feel of a wet suit better. I'll rock the drysuit when the air and water are in the 50's.

Evan - it seems hard to believe but he went down the river yesterday sticking about every trick he knows including the HS7 which he started working on this last month. He's just been mental about it since the day he broke the leg in 04 (it was the first day without it and he was cold.) Next will probably be the tux underneath like AHH-NOLD in True Lies!

Andrea: Chris's is a mens XXS and it finally fit's him about right I'd say. He's 5'7 and a buck-fifty.

This weekend was definately epic water conditions. We started out on Thursday and couldn't find a spot that the water was not a mirror to ride on. Friday and Sat the wind picked up a little but we found feather ripples on the other side of Holland trac and split the day on Sunday between Vic's and Holland Trac.

Evan while the masses invaded Vic's we had a hard time finding boats in the straights of Holland's. Just the big boats every once in a while in the late afternoon.

Andrea & Scott,

Thx for the pulls last night, had an absolute blast, Air temps was low 80's water temp around 63... It was only a bit chilly at first dump, but fine after that. We had spring suit or tops depending on rider...

Tyler - waters butta n a bit chilly at 63. The debris seem to be pickin up in qty as well.
Britt - take care of that knee, we got all winter too!
