I have used shampoo for the last 9 years. I personally like it better than slime. I typically go through a set of bindings every couple of years anyway because the wear out or there is a new set that I like. They have improved the binding material and construction in the last few years as well. The old one would dry out by the finger holes and rip, but the new ones have nylon strap and are sewn all the way down the heal pieces usually.

if you use dish soap you might want to dilute it out with some water just in case though

Hyperactive "Hyperglide" It washes away instantly when you put your board in the water and is environmentlly friendly. How can you guys use dish soap? It never completely washes away.

suave shampoo....only about 99 cents per bottle. Plus, the apple scent makes you land anything you try. Its so weird.

I prefer Liquid Hand Soap mixed with about 1/3 water (coconut scented). Provides enough lube yet washes away quickly. I've noticed that shampoo sticks around a little longer.

I put my teams on without water or soap. Just make sure your feet are completly dry.

Newt Juice is far superior to to all of the above products. They have years of testing their products with almost every pro in the world. It is not toxic and biodegradable. The material he uses has a patent and requires constant testing to ensure quality. He gives a tremendous money and time to the sport the he loves. It's very rare to find a small company in our sport that actually puts money into it. Support you local companies and boardshops.

Hey Jason, Howz the new pool?
Gotta pic? I heard it's pretty sweet.

Newt Juice may be superior, but we're talking about cheap alternatives. That stuff is pretty pricy. I'll stick to my .75 bottle of Joy.

Come on, you guys spend $500+ for a board/binding setup. $40,000 for a boat and you can't spend $40 bucks on a gallon of Newt Juice? That stuff is the best and well worth it.
Old     (kybool)      Join Date: Aug 2004       06-15-2005, 12:33 PM Reply
that is exactly why I can't spend $40 on a gallon. I prefer soap anyway much more lubricated, makes getting in the ultras a lot easier. Not worth it IMO.

I'm with you David. Xtremrider, you're barking up the wrong tree man.
Even at 40 bucks, what, it's like 10 cents at the most each time you lube up. (plenty cheap in my opinion) But granted, it's not the 1/2 a cent that your soap costs. So now, you worry about ruining your $300 bindings over 9 1/2 cents. Whatever, it cost me 10 cents just to send a text message from my cel phone.
Time to check your priorities...
I can appreciate wanting to save money but there are many more ways to save a lot more than that. Dude, if you are in sales then you know what it is like to watch someone spends a ton of bank and then go and "cheap-out" over the most ridiculous items. I know you laugh. That's what you are doing in my opinion. If cash is that tight, then what the heck, save the half cent a man and just muscle your bindings on.

I'm far too cheap to pay 40 bucks a gallon for slime. Make fun of me and call me what you will. I'll take the $39 left over and put it in my gas tank.

If you want to save money, learn to put on your boots with just water. Dish soap leaves residue which can allow you to come out of bindings just as easy as you got in, greatly increasing the chances of one foot in one foot out landing. I'd rather pay $30 for a gallon of Newt Juice than risk a broken ankle or blown knee. Newt Juice is great because is disapates almost instantly in the water. If you don't want to pay for lube, just use water.

Stanfield, thatís cool. Here are a few more tips for ya.
OK and don't buy a neoprene vest...just use one of those orange vests and put the $100 bucks in the tank. Buy a $99 hydroslide wakeboard & put the remaining 300 in the tank. Then sell your supra and get a Bayliner put the extra 25K in the tank. All these things work just as well and are way cheaper...after all why pay a lot for stuff when something cheaper will work almost as well, right? Me, I think you get what you pay for.
You have every right to spend or save your money however you see fit...but I think you are inconsistent having a boat and gear worth thousands of dollars, and then pinching so hard to save mere pennies each time you ride...that's all.

Gregg, I think that's a bit of a stretch at best. To say that a low end I/O performs the same as a wake specific inboard just isn't at all accurate. You might have been better off comparing a Moomba and a Nautique. The fact of the matter is, this sport is expensive and I'm a poor young kid. Hell, I can't even afford my boat by myself, I have to split all the costs with my roommate. I just picked up a new pair of bindings last week, but instead of paying $350 for new 05's, I paid $180 for a new leftover pair of 04's instead. Same thing with jackets, boards, handles, lines, etc.....I have to search out the deals to afford to hang in there. Also being a boat owner, I'm providing lube for everyone aboard as most people don't usually bring their own. Just getting a fair amount of gas money proves hard enough with some folks.

Anyways, I'll see you cats out on the lake rockin' my 04 stuff in 05 and using cheap soap to get my boots on. I hope no chicks see how cheap I am while I'm out there. I'll never get laid again.

PS. Sometimes we even ride with the ballast 1/2 full or empty to save on gas. Gregg I hope you don't roll by and make fun of my wake when we're doing that, I'd be crushed.

Dog saliva, never comes off. Let it dry, get it wet again and it's still slippery!

I was lucky enough to have a great crew by me a gallon of Newt juice. Since I own the boat they said I should not have to buy juice.

Stan, you sound like a cool dude and I feel your pain on so many levels. If you're ever out near the delta, mail me and I'll hook you up with a pull. I'll be happy to supply the newt but as for getting're on your own bro.

Joe, I went to your homepage ( and that word search is wicked hard.

I have always used a 50/50 dishsoap and water mixture. It has worked great for a long time. Oh yeah, been boarding since 95 and have never had problems with bindings associated with decay caused by soap.

Just recently I had the opportunity to use slime and I noticed that it didn't have nearly as good lubricative properties that my soap mixture has. I needed to use more slime to get the same results. The slime did disapate faster than the soap, then again I've never had problem with soap not disapating. Anyway, like everything else in wakeboarding - personal prefrence.
