Ok, I know there are cigar recommendations on here, but just curious about scotch. I have a buddy who just graduated from the police academy and wanted to get him a bottle as a gift, but don't want to break the bank. I know some of the common ones, but thought some of you guys could make a recommendation.

Some of my favorite "go to" scotches in no particular order.

Jura-http://www.whisky.com/brands/jura_brand.html
Lismore-http://www.drinksite.com/product.php?prod_id=3427
Aberlour-http://www.whisky.com/brands/aberlour_brand.html

You should be able to get these in 8-12 year for $35 or less. If I had to pick a favorite I would go with Lismore.

Good luck.

I like McCallan 12, got it at costco lq for $35, usually $45 anywhere else. I also like Balvienie doublewood 12, you can find that for abour $40 if you look hard.

Is your buddy a scotch drinker?

He's a new one, but he has not tried a whole bunch of different kinds. Just looking for something good that won't break the bank.

If he is new, any single malt will be fine. I use blended scotch to clean my toilets...

Oban is nice. McCallan 15 yr is smooth, the Cask Strength has a ton of flavor, but is a bit more harsh.

Have you had JW Blue Lable?

Yes I have had Jonny Blue; exception to the rule. Green is good too. For the money, I still prefer a single malt. McCallan 15 yr cask strength with a little purified water in it to get it to 80ish proof is very tasty. Straight out of the bottle is quite harsh as Evan said.

This is the reason I like mine with a little ice melted into it.

Brian, nice call!

when I was younger, my dad helped me finance my first restaurant. When I paid him off, I bought him a VERY expensive bottle of single malt. I knew that he would never buy something like that for himself. He said that it was the best Scotch that he had ever had. He said that I might have ruined scotch drinking for him, because he didn't know if he could ever go back to his $50 bottle ever again.

see if you can get your hands on this:
