I had a 1990 model 5.0 that had 185,000 miles on it. Before i sold it I replaced the ECU and it took care of the slugishness. You can pick up an ECU at most auto parts stores for around 100.00....

Not sure why you would need to disconnect anything to remove the steering cable. It will go quick with 2 people. You need to unbolt the cable from the steering rack and the rudder. Tie a heavy nylon...
