Nice composition Randy!

Use as much telephoto as you have including any TC's you've got. Start at f8 and 1/200th and keep adjusting your aperture/ISO until you get it exposed properly. If you set the camera on auto you will end up with a pure white mass and no detail.

Here's one I shot with the 20D a few years ago.

Nice shots! Randy- do you still have that full moon shot over Villa Lagos from a couple of years ago?

wakedad33 12-14-2008 10:31 AM

Peter that was taken with my old Sony disc camera, I will see if I can find the disc.

Hey Rich, what zoom did you use on that moon shot? Shooting with your 400mm?

-S

richd 12-16-2008 5:20 AM

That was shot with a 300 f2.8L + 2X +1.4X & 20D

alans 12-16-2008 6:19 AM

so a 1,260 mm equivalent? Assuming the 20D has a 1.5 crop factor.

alans 12-16-2008 6:20 AM

or is it just 840mm equiv.

richd 12-16-2008 1:49 PM

Technically it's 840mm and then you have to compare pixel density to figure out what the relationship is. The 20D had relatively large pixels so there might be no difference if you were shooting with a full frame 1Ds2 or 3 for example where as you'd get a lot of crop factor magnification with a 50D or XSi

That's an uncropped photo above, if you get a sharp shot you can get away with a lot of cropping.

Awesome images as always Rich & Randy.
Rodney- There is a lot of online info on shooting the moon. Check out AstronomyMag.com , SkyandTelescope.com . Remember that using higher powered lenses also amplifies the impurities & heat waves in the atmosphere.
Good luck and email if I can help.
bvaught@cfl.rr.co m

Attached image is just after mid eclipse a few years ago.
