Can any owners or dealers comment on: <BR> <BR>1) Whether or not a guy needs the 8.1L in the 24SSV. I know its never a bad idea to get more HP... just wondering if the boat really needs it with full 2100# ballast and about 8 people in the boat. <BR> <BR>2) Is anyone having any problems with the 8.1L? I read something about stalling problems but I cant seem to find the info again. <BR> <BR>3) How much have people paid for the 8.1L option? <BR> <BR>4) Anything you think I should know before ordering the 8.1L <BR> <BR>Any help would be much appreciated... thanx. <BR> <BR>KV

I will chime in.....Dont have a supra but I bet the engines are the same: <BR> <BR>1:Nobody needs it but it is a nice-to-have, Chris Wynn has it in his Bu LSV and the boat leaps out of the water (he also has a 14x18 prop). The motor is very torquey and you will find that instead of dropping the throttle to go, you ease it up and the motor does the work. <BR> <BR>2: Stalling.....Yes it does on the Non-throttle by wire version especially during Break-in and when you throw the throttle from go to neutral. THe new TBW version I drove had no such problem this year it was sooooo smooth. Long and short of it, you have to have the throttle body dialed in perfectly if you do not have TBW. WHat happens is so much air is going into the motor, when you put it into nuetral the motor basically hiccups on the lack of air and stalls (my non-scientific description) <BR> <BR>3: Bu charges $2000 for the upgrade <BR> <BR>4: IMPORTANT: LOOK TO SEE IF THEY UPGRADED THE TRANNY TO COMPENSATE FOR ALL THE TORQUE!!! Rich I am assuming that the 2000 figure was a typo just don't want any false info. <BR>I have ridden in two boats that had the 8.1 one being Gerry Nunn's 23LSV and the power was definately nice to have. We had full ballast 13 people and led scattered throughout to even up the wake and the boat never struggled. The other boat was an 05 X-Star and it was much better out of the hole compared to the LQ9 in that boat. <BR>So I would say that there are some people that need it but not all, and I for one if possible would have the 8.1 in a heartbeat. If Malibu would put the 8.1 in a Vlx it would be my ultimate boat.

I have a 315hp (350cu. in) in my 2003 Avalanche, and run 2400lb ballast with 3 people in the boat, and have NO problem getting out of the hole or holding speed (I ride at 25mph). The Avalanche is 22' and weighs 3200lbs dry... so it's fairly comparable. In my opinion, that big of an engine will not provide enough of a performance boost to justify the cost or decrease in gas consumption. <BR> <BR>Another thing to consider... when selling the boat down the road, the 8.1 may make people less likely to be interested (since it guzzles gas). <BR> <BR>Hope this helps!

Gerry Nun compairson is a good one. I bet he is always running weight and has a few people with him to justify the extra needed horsepower. <BR> <BR>A friend had a SAN with the Big Block im guessig it was a 454 or 502 it was the python motor and he said he would go threw almost twice the gas as our 351 (GT-40). <BR> <BR>So if your using lots of weight and are always out with a bunch of people and are planning a big stereo with extra battery's the larger motor woulnt hurt. <BR> <BR>For some people loooking 4 a boat with a Big Block it might be a red flag because they wont want the extra gas consumption. <BR> <BR>If you have a company paid gas card I say go ahead and get the big block.<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" border=0>

From a dealer's point of view: <BR> <BR>I've driven 4-5 24SSV's, only two having the 8.1. The only reason I would personally get the 8.1 is if I always ride with full ballast and 8 people or more all of the time. If you don't ride with full ballast and/or less people, the 340 is just fine, I would recommend the wakeboard prop though. The 450 hp is very nice but for me, it can be overkill. <BR> <BR>As far as the stalling, we had one that stalled when going from heavy throttle to neutral. However, Indmar has put out a service bulletin to fix this issue, no problems since. <BR> <BR>The 8.1 does use more oil and gas but getting on plane so fast is sometimes worth it. <BR> <BR>So its just your call. If you want to be on plane in no time and can afford it, get the 8.1. If you don't mind just a little extra planing time, get the 340.

I noticed that the 325HP is an option... I would assume the 325HP option would come with a credit. <BR> <BR>I know... I know... I should talk to my own dealer... which I obviously am... I ordered a boat from him; however, it just seems that the 8.1L option is so "rarely" ordered that my dealer doesn't seem sure about how much to charge. The one number I got was WAY MORE than the $2000 that BU charges. <BR> <BR>So nothing against my dealer... he is a great guy... I heard it was a $6500 upgrade..... Go with the wakeboard prop and the 340. You will never see $6500 on resale and if your dealer is not that familiar with upgrade cost, I bet his mechanic is prob not that familiar with the engine if there are probs....

KV, <BR> <BR>5) It has a bigger oil pan (needs 10 quarts) AND it uses more oil. <BR> <BR>6) Retail charge for the upgrade from 340 to 8.1 is $5,250 USD. <BR> <BR>7) Answered in #6. $5,250 is upgraded from 340. smallest engine you can get in the GGE is the 340 hp. <BR> <BR>I'm still having a hard time believing that the 8.1 is only a $2000 upgrade from Malibu. Is that an upgrade from the 6 litre or what??? That information may be correct but it just seems a little low. For the Supra, between $4,500 and $5,250 seems fair to me for an upgrade from 340 to the 8.1.

Supra configurer shows the 8.1L on the 24 SSV as $6495. That is what Supra's MSRP on it is, that is what I would assume you should expect to pay. Like Diggs said you will never see anywhere close to that on resale. You might see a $1000 for it 5 years down the road. You may also see gas at $5 a gallon and not being able to unload it. I ran a Ski Challenger years ago (3500 lb tank) plus 1500 lb in ballast with a 13x13 OJ 4 Blade with a 265hp Mercury magnum Carb. I never had a hard time out of the water. I can't see how 340 hp wouldn't be enough.

There are lots of different ways to look at the 8.1L upgrade... thats for sure. <BR> <BR>I agree... the $2000 is suspect to go from 5.7L to 8.1L <BR> <BR>The Supra website does show the 325HP as an option on the 24SSVGG; however, I have not run across this configurator thing<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/blush.gif" border=0> <BR> <BR>Just had a thought... more guys than not are running the 350 MCX in the Xstar (heavier boat) and doing alright... I dont hear them complaining or see a flood of small block Xstars on the market either. <BR> <BR>I'm gonna wait 30 mintes (11:30 AM here in Alberta) have a beer, relax and order the 340HP with the wakeboard prop. <BR> <BR>Cheers. <BR>

I think it is a 5k +/- a few hundred to go from 340-8.1 but only 2k from 383 to 8.1. To me it still sounds low but that makes more sense.

Kevin, <BR>Keep in mind that wakeplate and the wakeboard prob will get you out of the hole just fine. We load our 21V with about 2300lbs of weight and use the 325 with the wakeboard prop and using the wake plate properly works just fine... <BR>Good luck

The X-Star could use the 8.1 if you want to use it slammed for wakeboarding AND also for cruising and occasional slalom. <BR>We just bought one with the MCX engine but you HAVE TO reprop to get it to perform good with an extra 2000lbs and a couple of people in the boat. With that new prop (small diameter, same pitch) it will rev higher and make the boat jump out of the water, but it will sit at around 4500rpm just cruising... <BR>

i have a mobius XLV 23' and it has just the 325hp engine and with 1100lbs of ballast and people on it, it gets up and goes with no problems. honestly i couldn't ever see needing 100more HP, im sure it sucks a lot more gas <BR>

I love the 8.1 in my X-Star. After coming from the LTR330 (x-30) -> LQ9 (x-30) -> 8.1 it's the only thing i'll order in any Wake boat again. I agreee it's all how you prop your boat, but with 10 people all their gear and full ballast NO one could tell me they are not happy for any extra HP they can get. As for gas it happily burns the cheapest 87 you can find. Unlike our LTR (liked Shell/Exxon) and heaven forbid if you tried the stuff with the LQ9. Plus i'm not spinning that motor nearly as hard with all that weight as I was the smaller motors. My degree is in Economics and believe me when factored into buying something as expensive as the 40k 55k 60k and even 70k boats that we here buy, the extra $300 gas a year was worth knowing my boat would perform no matter what situation I threw at it.

The wakeboard prop is a factory upgrade, I also highly reccommend the Acme prop, The wakedevils are running something like a 13x15 on their 21V with a little more than 3000lbs of weight plus people and the 325 hp and it gets it up where the 13.7x17.5 would have struggled badly. <BR> <BR>I personally don't see the value of the 8.1, what are Supra riders using? Dave Briscoe has it but has seen a few problems that he worked out, customers that have been through his clinic have bought the 340 per his advice, I also know Trevor Hanson has the 325hp in his 24 per a conversation he had with a PHX pro who's looking to get a 24 which will also have the 340 in it. It's all about the prop in my opinion.

The best thing to do is drive one with the 8.1 and drive one without. <BR>I just bought a 2006 23 LSV after driving both it was well worth the additional $6,200. We always have a full house with lots of ballast.

I think Supra has a huge hole in their power lineup. The 24 needs more than 340 hp. I drove one with three people in it and the ballast full and imediately knew I would not be happy without more power. <BR> <BR>However having to go all the way to 450 is ridiculous. They need a 400 hp option.
