I wakesurfed last year sucessfully behind someone elses boat. this year behind our boat I cann't seem to get the hang of it! We have a 98 xstar with about 4 adults and a kid no additional weight.. 10-12 mph, Also the rope is killing my hands with rope burn. What am I to do??

try having everyone sit in a back corner and don't forget to pump the wake like a real surfboard.

And wear some gloves for your hands till you get used to it.

I think you need more weight on the port side. I have a Malibu LSV and I put three fat sacs in the port side rear corner locker plus I have everyone sit on the port side if possible. 10 mph works the best for my boat. Also, buy a Straighline EVA Wakesurf Rope and Handle and your hands will thank you. It's a short rope and short handle that's made specifically for wakesurfing. I used one all last summer and it was perfect. You can pick one up at many watersports stores or online. Don't drop the rope until you find the sweetspot and after that you've got it.

Thanks for all the advice... I did buy the LF wake surfing rope, but am unclear of how I should hold on to the end? or use the knots?? Also, if I am on the left side behind the boat should the tip be pointed away from the boat or towards the boat?? Sorry for all the confusion!

I think the knots are meant to take the place of a real handle but it doesn't surprise me that it's hurting your hands. I'd sell it to someone else and buy the Straightline rope and handle since it works great and won't hurt your hands. If you're regular foot (left foot forward), the nose of your board should be pointing to the left when you start.
