which is a better camera nikon d80 or the rebel xti?

phantom5815 01-03-2007 3:38 PM

Looking down the forum list you will find a plethora of information on both cameras.

richd 01-03-2007 4:39 PM

Yep, which is better, ford or chevy?

At that level I'd call it a draw image wise, I think the D80 has a few more features then the Canon. Best to handle both at the local store if you can, one may feel better then the other.

Ken Rockwell now says D40 or D200, nothing in between, if you want to go with Nikon.

clubmyke 01-04-2007 3:08 AM

would pass on the xti... if you wanted to go with canon then the 30d...

something to really consider is the intended lens you are going to use (it is a system buy). would look at the type of lens you intend to purchase and then look at bodies (canon l & primes are very good)

If Ken rockwell is diss-ing the D80 then that's the one I would get.

You start mentioning that guy anywhere near a Canon forum:

Ken Rockwell has been reviewing Canons since has started to add them to his collection.

richd 01-04-2007 6:28 PM

Well wonders never cease . . . is he actually giving Canon a fair shake? The discussion used to be about guessing how much Canon was paying him under the table.

At this point I don't think one can go wrong with either brand these days.

scott_a 01-04-2007 7:48 PM

yep...Canon and Nikon both know DAMN well what each other is doing...and that Ken Rockwell guy writes some pretty useless reviews. The only thing I remember from reading some of his stuff a few months ago when I was bored was that some camera didn't operate exactly how he wanted it to. Gee, thanks for the great gear review, Ken..

the reason why Ken Rockwell says either d40 or D200 is because he has the choice of all these cameras and when he shoots he likes his d40 when he isn't planning on shooting alot because the camera is extremely light and great image quality but when he is going out to shoot alot of photos he likes the d200 the best because of its more advanced features. so for Ken he is going to use either one of those for his type of shooting, but for someone that will only have one camera the D80 is great. it has the same image quality as the d200 but in a slightly smaller body with few less advanced features.

The word in San Diego it that Nikon service response to the pros has been extremely poor. So bad that the San Diego Zoological Society and majority (if not all) of the media photogs have all now switched over to Canon. I if recall correctly that was one of the reasons that Mike Isler gave for switching to Canon.
So far from what I've read, he has been giving Canon good reviews.

(Message edited by phantom5815 on January 05, 2007)

Mike- you really shouldn't be making camera recommendations to others based on your single experience with 1 bad body. The XTi is an extremely capable camera with the same auto focusing system and most of the features of the 30D. If he needs 5fps or the extended buffer then by all means the 30D or 200D are his only choices but that's not what he asked.

I'm not doubting that you had bad results with the one you had. I just doubt that you had a good copy. Either that or it was operator error because the auto focusing and metering systems are identical to the 30D. IMO it's a much better bang for the buck. (at least until the 40D comes out next month.)

richd 01-05-2007 4:19 PM

I guess the D80 pricewise is about the same as the Canon 30D so comparing it to the XTI isn't a fair comparison. You could buy a nice lens to go with the XTi with the $500 you'd save.

My last post I meant to say Ken R. is paid by Nikon (not Canon)
