Mastercraft X-Star Half Off

12 Attachment(s)
Was out on Texas Mastercraft's new showroom (next door to the old one) earlier this week and was able to snap some photos of the first new body X-Star that TXMC has in the showroom now. Really cool to see and worth stopping by for!

polarbill 01-23-2014 8:52 AM

Man, look at all that foam. Good thing it has that or it would sink.

bftskir 01-23-2014 9:00 AM

If they used wood in the structure instead of foam they wouldn't need wood to prop the flimsy thing up.

pprior 01-23-2014 9:52 AM

Wow, super cool pics. Would love to look at this close up myself. thanks for posting.

damnit, came here to say this

corerider 01-23-2014 10:34 AM

It would need to be cheaper than half-price for me to buy it... It doesn't have half an engine!

pierce_bronkite 01-23-2014 10:35 AM

Whew, this thread is gonna get out of hand real quick!

slowwwflowww 01-23-2014 11:38 AM

^^^^^^yup

timmyb 01-23-2014 11:41 AM

That's awesome! Thanks for sharing the pics with us.

ToPHeR35 01-23-2014 1:15 PM

I've seen that MC wrap before on a German pro series tour boat...

grant_west 01-23-2014 2:55 PM

That's pretty cool. I wonder how they did that. Cut away's are not as easy as you would think.

It would be cool to see side by side how each manufacture makes each boat.

craigtxmc 01-23-2014 3:01 PM

G, that would be fabulous. I'm afraid many would be exposed! :)

buzzardmountainz 01-23-2014 3:09 PM

dat foam...

cwb4me 01-23-2014 3:29 PM

It's nice to see uniform hull thickness as well as deck and floors.

What else did you expect from the world's leading manufacture and all-around good guys?

bstroop 01-23-2014 4:23 PM

I would prefer to not know what it looks like cut-away. That way I could still believe there's something inside that makes it sooo expensive.

Joking! Kind of......

craigtxmc 01-23-2014 4:24 PM

The hollow ones are not exactly inexpensive!

They must have taken their sponsors and advertising dollars out of the hollow cavities when they cut it in half - so you can't see where the real cost of the boat is.

grant_west 01-23-2014 5:59 PM

And I have to add. If Mastercraft did this Prop's to them. It takes alot of Industry Balls to do this. Not only for the fact that they scrapped a 100K boat but putting your work out their for everyone to pick apart. Im glad to see Voids and imperfections in the Foam area's because that's very normal and that's how foam can lay out. Im glad to see some one didn't come back and touch up or add fill to make it look pretty. Makes me have a bit more trust for the rest of the cut away. Its cool to see how thick certain walls or materials are. and the different layers involved. Back when Malibu was touting how strong the Transoms of the boats that had a wedge installed Very few knew and saw what a stock Malibu transom looked like and how minimum it was I doubt they wanted the public to see that aera of the boat or for that matter cut a boat in 1/2 and put it up to be criticized. So Props to MC for lifting up your skirt :)

MC has lifted more skirts than Tige has lifted hull designs!

Exposed to what? Thanks for the pics btw. The hulls only get exposed when they fail. Of the major brands, how many have failed? Basically it doesnt matter what each company does to build their boats, as long as it functions as designed. There is more than one way to build a bridge.

With all that being said, I want those orange seats in my Axis. Those look sick. Btw, i dont hate mastercraft, just not rich enough yet to own one. I visit my local mastercraft dealer more than I do my Axis dealer.

craigtxmc 01-23-2014 7:23 PM

A failure doesn't have to occur for a boat to have better components and more expensive build techniques does it?
Does a Camry have to fail to prove that a Lexus is better built?

It's not a knock on Camry. Many of those who purchase a Camry could easily buy a Lexus but they choose not to for whatever reason.

I love that people are passionate about boats and I don't have anything against any of them but MC gets dogged on WW and they build one of the two best built tow boats in the industry. But for some reason everyone dogs them. The boat cut in half proves that they put more in hull construction than anyone, even if there isn't enough perceived content inside. The other manufacturers do less and still command a high price. What does that say about them?

More content. Stronger stringers and hulls. That can't be denied no matter how much you hate them or think they are over priced. All tow boats are too dang expensive if you ask me.

And for the record I can't afford any of them so I'm strictly a cheerleader, respectfully.

And, as always, "in my opinion"

JetRanger 01-23-2014 8:28 PM

Craig I know you've been away for awhile now but MC doesn't get dogged much on WW anymore. We all dog Ti-guh now.

wakemaker1 01-23-2014 9:16 PM

I dont see $100,000 in no way shape or form !

RideGull 01-24-2014 6:41 AM

Don't forget that this was the official release boat.
MC soon after went back and redesigned the '13 xstar before it was put into production.
There's nothing they really could have done with this boat besides scrap it.

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 7:09 AM

Ride, all of the first prototypes are scrapped. Those boats endure 100's of hours of validation and testing. They are not going to end up on the showroom for sale. Do you think the first prototype G was sold as a new boat to someone? Would you be ok if you bought a new boat and found out it had 300 hours of prior abuse by people trying to basically see how it would hold up in worst conditions? Come on now...
By no means is this an XStar only thing.

LeeG23 01-24-2014 9:15 AM

Very cool to see inside the boat. Makes me want to drive over and see in person! I really respect the efforts all manufacturers put into these boats. Look back what we had 20 yrs ago and see the progression, we had direct drives with skylons!

Look 3 years back, and see how many new designs have been put out. I think competition only benefits us, the customers

Easy there.
I never said it was an xstar only thing.
It seemed like a few people thought this was a normal xstar worth over 100k.
I was just pointing out that this wasn't a final production boat.

bftskir 01-24-2014 10:14 AM

So there was more foam in the final production boats....I see.

bftskir 01-24-2014 10:17 AM

They probably also used the green foam made from shredded hundred dollar bills.

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 10:19 AM

I think the green foam actually came from envy.

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 10:20 AM

ha

bftskir 01-24-2014 10:40 AM

The Envy...isn't that the new Centurion?

onthecreek 01-24-2014 11:05 AM

Funny that some are expecting to see $100k in materials in these boats (not just MC). Things like R&D, marketing, employee expenses (incentives and benefits), basic overhead costs like buildings and tools, taxes and regulations, etc, etc are all part of final pricing. Don't forget the dealers and component suppliers get to make money, too. Nobody is in business to be a non-profit or just to break even.

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 11:17 AM

If they only knew what the others looked like..

This had nothing to do with foam.

bftskir 01-24-2014 11:53 AM

Why is there foam in the boat? For structural support? What is the official sales spin on this low cost manufacturing process?

DenverRider 01-24-2014 12:10 PM

Isn't there a requirement for a certain amount of floatation from foam or other by the US Coast Guard or something like that? I imagine that with all the space that used to be for floatation now being used for ballast tanks, it's more difficult to find places to fit the foam.

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 12:12 PM

no foam requirements my friend. only 2 use foam.

some of the other boats, such as a Sanger, actually use cedar and mahogany stringers.
ha

@Hey. j/k :)

onthecreek 01-24-2014 12:15 PM

It would be alot more interesting to hear how the boat was actually cut in 2 than harping about a little foam used here and there. If this was an 80's structural design with foam poured encapsulating wooden stringers I could see the issue. But, a few voids filled with foam...so what?

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 12:22 PM

Extra buoyancy and noise dampening. You can look at it 2 ways I guess.
1) They go above and beyond all but 1 other manufacturer
2) So what?

Have you ridden in one on a weekend day with foam compared to one without? Happy wife. Happy life.

bftskir 01-24-2014 12:28 PM

My MC fell apart, they said I used the boat too much. Haven't had that issue with Sanger.

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 12:44 PM

They're all made with overkill techniques and they all hold up just fine. Originally just wanted to share the photos so those who haven't actually seen what boat look like beneath the floor could take a peak. Sure, it looks like a simple process and it looks like you don't get much for your money. But when you think that the entire boat is hand crafted it's pretty amazing how they all turn out.

It's always fun to have a good time with everyone and their brand loyalty and passion. It's all good.
Thanks to everyone who commented on this thread.

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 12:45 PM

And by all I meant all brands. Wasn't referring to all MC's.

bftskir 01-24-2014 12:57 PM

If you want to see how you build a boat without foam just watch the lamination video on sangerboats.com the use of foam is discussed and wood is sported.

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 1:07 PM

You just lost all credibility.

Sure. That's what they said...

Just for the record, I loved my Sanger...but my Mastercraft with 1000 hours runs, drives, handles, handles chop, and gets girls WAY better than my Sanger with 200 hours did...;)

Thanks for posting those pics!

bftskir 01-24-2014 7:03 PM

Is the top cap glassed to the lower hull? My MC had pop rivets holding on the rubrail which also held topdeck to hull. They worked loose and fell out. Water came in. Never made 500 hours. We might have used it harder than they planned. Still building them that way?

craigtxmc 01-24-2014 7:14 PM

It's just taped

JWalk 01-25-2014 8:11 AM

Nice job Texas MasterCraft great idea!!!! If anyone ever gets a chance while in Tennessee and you care about how a boat is built the MasterCraft factory tour is a must. They are so good at the details its an easy brand to fall in love with. Beware though don't drink the cool aid.

bftskir 01-25-2014 8:47 AM

I see pop rivets

craigtxmc 01-25-2014 8:52 AM

They tried pop rivets on a Sanger but they shot all the way through the boat and injured one of the laminate guys working on the other side of the boat.
Lol

bftskir 01-25-2014 10:00 AM

The foam is there because when a MC hits something hard the fins get pushed through the hull leaving big holes so the foam gives you more time to swim for it. If it hasn't sunk already from pop rivets working loose and falling out.

craigtxmc 01-25-2014 10:04 AM

Dude, there were more people at the local donut shop this morning than at the entire Sanger factory. I use factory lightly. More light assembly garage. ha

bftskir 01-25-2014 10:22 AM

Where is MCs video tour of the factory showing every step and explaining why they build what they build?

craigtxmc 01-25-2014 10:32 AM

I think it's on their website. Does Sanger have one of those?
Lol

No bs.. Sanger does make one of the best barefoot boats out there.
It's because the fiberglass is so thin it lightens up the boat.

craigtxmc 01-25-2014 10:32 AM

Lol

I gotta get back to work man. That's for the banter. Lol

bftskir 01-25-2014 1:29 PM

No bs here...I just have firsthand experience.

They really are still held together by pop rivets? Please show me I'm wrong.

bftskir 01-25-2014 6:35 PM

Anybody have a pic of Lon's boat sinking on Pedro? Post here please...I know you have it.

phathom 01-25-2014 11:40 PM

Too bad it only puts out a goofy surf wave. Totally a deal breaker for me.

bftskir 02-01-2014 7:05 PM

So it is still just pop riveted. WOW that's quality?

craigtxmc 02-01-2014 7:17 PM

We're in the middle of 10 long days at boat show but no pop rivets my friend.

I did get some good insight on the Sanger barefooted. They actually said it was a really good boat. No BS

Perhaps second to Malibu Flightcraft only?
Not bad.. Not bad.

snork 02-01-2014 8:06 PM

Malibu has a Flightcraft? Betting the new 2014 ProStar runs circles around any past or present barefoot boats, Sagner included

bftskir 02-01-2014 8:37 PM

When it comes to competition barefooting Sanger is #1 , all others will sit parked unless there is no Sanger.

bftskir 02-01-2014 8:40 PM

Can you post better pics of the bow and transom to show how they are attached? That would be cool to see.

Please stop and think for moment or get behind the wheel of the 14 Prostar before making a comment like this...

bftskir 02-04-2014 10:24 AM

What I said is just a widely known fact.

aricsx15 02-04-2014 12:18 PM

*Opinion

bftskir 02-04-2014 8:53 PM

In my opinion Malibu bought flightcraft then the flightcraft guy took Malibus money and moved to Calif and started Wakecraft. Uh oh my opinion could be fact.

bftskir 02-04-2014 8:54 PM

Tell me all about that barefoot edition prostar too.

aricsx15 02-04-2014 9:05 PM

Which one? Theres been a bunch. Tell me about those rotten stringers in your sanger?

bftskir 02-05-2014 9:49 AM

Well it's a 1990 and no rot, no foam just solid quality construction. Sangers been building boats since 1954. Family owned still.

bftskir 02-05-2014 9:55 AM

Sanger is the only company that does not limit the amount of horsepower you can bolt into a Sanger hull.

bftskir 02-05-2014 10:00 AM

If you ski in barefoot tournaments you won't be skiing a mastercraft. They just don't build anything that works for wake slalom. Fact.

Captain_obvious 02-05-2014 6:36 PM

Who tells you these outlandish things? Are you typing these replies from the sanger garage/factory? And what is wake slalom? have you heard of the 2014 Prostar?
