trailer winch shot and need to tow boat to shop
So my trailer winch went last time I was out and I need to tow it about 90 miles to the shop. What does everyone recommend tying the boat to the trailer with? Will Just a strong piece of rope work or should I use a tie strap, ect? The boat needs a service and is running a little hot as well which is why I am not just having a new winch shipped to me.

my advice...wait till the new winch comes in. If the boat isn't secured proeprly, you will beat the crap out fo the fiberglass up near the bow( best possible outcome) and in general it's just not safe. ghettto---use a tie down you can wich down tight to the trailer.
you wont' be able to pull a rope tight enough. |
If you don't have the option to fix it (quick and simple fix) than I would make sure I have my rear straps on and I would use a ratchet strap to make sure it doesn't bounce or move around on the journey. Rope and/or tie strap aint gonna do it.

just use a ratchet strap and tow the boat to the shop. As long as its pulled up tight to the bow stop you'll be good.
|
if you have to buy a new winch strap anyway, why not find the best deal online and order it? probably the same $ or cheaper than your dealer and you wouldnt have to worry about whether or not your boat is tied down correctly. i understand supporting your local shop, but i wouldnt take the risk.

I think a ratchet strap would be fine. Just get a good heavy duty one and get it tight. Lowes usually has some good ones.

Sorry I meant ratchet strap not tie down. The reason I don't just go buy one is because it will cost me nothing to have the dealer do it under warranty. I could have them ship it to me but that would probably add a week and I am dying to get back on the water as it has already been 2 weeks since I rode last.

Ratchet strap, cheap an easy.
It's good insurance to use it along with your winch for longer hauls, like 90 miles. |
Totally agree, a good quality ratchet strap will hold it no problem.
