Audio gurus - how high can you hear?

I could only hear up to 16,000. Oh well, guess I'm getting old.

12,000 Hz...but then I am 45.

wakeandsnow27 08-13-2013 10:07 AM

I can hear 15k, everything after that is an intermittent crackle.

I can hear that crackle in all of the higher ones too. Like a clicking or something, could be due to youtube compression? Heck, who knows if there is even noise in those higher ones, could be a game! :D

A lot depends on the setting. You might be able to hear 15 kHz with a test tone through headphones or in a perfectly quiet room if your state of hearing is good. And although you may hear 15 kHz, the sensitivity is certainly reduced as compared to midrange. You will not hear 15 kHz in an open environment with even a whisper of wind or noise. Your high frequency range will suffer as you get older and listen to louder music for longer. 8 kHz might be the top end while surfing with even less HF range at wake distance.
Keep in mind that music born fundamentals only reach to slightly above 4 kHz.
I doubt a youtube test over a computer speaker is valid.

What frequency do old tube tv's power supplies emit? They seem like they are up in that 12k-15k range.

CarZin 08-13-2013 11:41 AM

I can definitely hear 16k. 17k and above is just crackles, which means you aren't hearing the pitch.

I am 35.

This test isn't accurate to just your ears.. You need to factor in the device playing the clip, and its ability to replicate the frequencies. It may be a limitation of the sound card / speakers in your computer.

For example, on my laptop I can hear the 15k note, but 16k no-go. If I open the same video on my iPhone I am able to clearly hear the 16k frequency no problem.

You're right! I just used my Droid DNA that has Beats Audio and I could hear up to 18,000. Couldn't hear anything with 19 though. Much clearer and I used the same headphones for both tests. Man, 18,000 is up there, don't want to listen to that one too much.

18kHz sounds similar to a tube TV being on (no volume) that I mentioned before.

kinda like a video of tower speaker performance, recorded on an auto-gain-ranging cell phone, compressed and then played back over computer speakers... ????????

Think most of us are getting old. My 11yr and 8yr old heard the tones all the way up to 18,000

olmoomba 08-23-2013 1:12 PM

yup, my 14 and 10 yr old boys could hear it all the way to the end. I did have to turn the volume up on my laptop tho, and I still couldn't hear it. That was weird. "Can you hear it?" Yes, well ****, I can't.

Scotty 08-23-2013 3:39 PM

Holy Cow - I could only hear the 8K. Everything after that was silent. I'm 49 but must have gone to too any loud concerts in the '80s.

ktm525 08-23-2013 4:00 PM

I can hear 15k and i am 47. My daughter is the same and she is 15

markj 08-23-2013 11:01 PM

This test is BS. I just had my hearing tested at an audiologist's office in a sound proof room recently and have minimal hearing loss at 45 years old. That said, I can't even hear this YouTube past the first frequency. This is garbage.

markj 08-23-2013 11:04 PM

Whoops. Meant the second one.

phathom 08-25-2013 3:26 PM

I heard the clicking and a lot of nothing at first, then I upped it to 1080p and played it again and heard up through 18k. I'm 28 listening on a POS old Dell Laptop.
