Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone tows with a Tahoe LTZ? I have an Xstar and am a little concerned about how well this thing will tow it. The one I am looking at has the 5.3L V8. Right now we tow with an 06 F-250 6.0L TD but my wife really wants one because we are having a baby soon. Also, I will be out of the country for a year so we have to decide what is best. Since it would be replacing my truck, I need it to tow the boat.

duckguy 03-04-2009 3:53 PM

They are awsome trucks but I would not want to haul my x-star without my duramax. I think the baby should fit in your Ford though.

You will have no problem towing with that. Yes, it isn't a 1 ton diesel, but it will tow that size trailer easily.

andrew_moreton 03-04-2009 4:09 PM

I have the previous body style Tahoe with the 5.3L V8 and it tows an XStar fine. It's no diesel, but it still can tow my boat without many problems besides awful gas mileage. I've towed 100+ miles before in hilly areas and it did the trick. Just depends on how often you are towing and how far. If you need diesel and a SUV, look for a diesel Excursion.

polarbill 03-04-2009 4:11 PM

It should do ok but I would make sure it has a transmission cooler on it.

deltaboy 03-04-2009 4:34 PM

It's not a Tahoe but we just got a new Suburban LTZ and the pkg includes an upgraded trailering pkg which has the trany cooler. Pulls way better than my 2005 burb. The Tahoe will do fine.

silvermustang35 03-04-2009 5:49 PM

I've got a Silverado Extended Cab with the 5.3 and it is a strong engine for sure..Def get the tranny cooler or add it in...I have it on mine and im sure its helped...I know its not a SUV, but as far as the engine id say you're good.If im not mistaken thats a new version of the old 327. Is it positrack, limited slip, 4wd?

(Message edited by silvermustang35 on March 04, 2009)

ponyh8r 03-04-2009 6:09 PM

Yeah, posi but a 2WD model. I am a little worried about launching it as well without 4WD, so I will have to consider that.

silvermustang35 03-04-2009 6:14 PM

I've got limited slip on mine and havent had much trouble, tires were lowwww on traction and it slipped but didn't pull me back in the water or anything. Again, my boat only weighs about 3300-ish...another thing to consider is braking...even though it can pull it how will it do braking to it...I would guess you have surge brakes or something? That big of a vehicle (full size) shouldn't have the braking issues I wouldnt believe. Does it have the tow package which has the tranny cooler, brake controller and better suspension, etc.?

johnsvt 03-04-2009 7:23 PM

The 09's have a six speed tranny now...

joe_crawley 03-04-2009 7:28 PM

I have a 4WD LTZ and it tows my X1 great. I've got the 4 speed tranny though, gets 11/12mpg pretty consistently while towing around Michigan. LTZ package also includes the electronic suspension so as soon as I hook on the boat or detach it you hear and see the rear suspension raising or lowering.

littletna 03-04-2009 7:33 PM

We tow with one. It obviously won't pull the hills like the diesel but take it easy and she'll treat you fine. There's plenty out there to steal nowadays. Find a 4 wheel drive if you can so you don't slide in the drink at the ramp. Good luck. Here's ours with 22's. We pull an XLV for comparison in weight.

duckguy 03-04-2009 8:12 PM

You can get a new 09 with the 6.2l that is in the Escalades, that would be pretty cool.

ixfe 03-04-2009 8:50 PM

Suburban LTZ here! I have not towed much, but my MB is 3,900 lbs, not including trailer... so I bet it feels like an X-Star would.

Anyway, in my limited experience, this thing tows great! I am in love with the self leveling suspension!!

cpizzle 03-04-2009 9:40 PM

You wont have a problem. Try to get the heavy duty trailering package though.

saceone 03-05-2009 1:33 AM

oh god not that white suburban again...

now I wanna get one
slick ride and great boat again pal

jstewart319 03-05-2009 3:42 AM

I had a 1500 Silverado with the 5.3L and the motor had loads of power however the transmission is the week link when towing. I towed a heavy load cross country, from Nebraska to Virginia, (16ft enclosed trailer with a ’31 Ford Model A inside about 8000+lb) with the Silverado. The flatter states were great but as soon as we hit West Virginia and the mountains it struggled. And than about a week later the tranny started to slip and than soon after broke all together. I had a tranny cooler, added new fluids and had it flushed before the long trip. I also could not run the AC, gas mileage went way down and it felt like the motor could not handle the added load. Soon after I got a new transmission I traded it for a new 2500 Silverado diesel with an Allison transmission so no more transmission problems.
Congratulations on the new baby and tell your wife hi.

mbouchard 03-05-2009 5:02 AM

We used to tow all the time with our suburban - no problems. Once we started the dealership and used it for commercial use - rear diffs would not hold up.

For normal use you should have no problems with that Tahoe.

mkrueger313 03-05-2009 6:02 AM

i have at 04 z71 that pulls my boat great... the tahoe and burb are just really smooth runners i love mine

michaelspsp 03-05-2009 6:02 AM

ive towed my x-star with a trailblazer- not recommended! bought an x-5 but found out the tow hitch was $1000. so i use my GFs ford expedition. no problems. i only tow at the beginning and end of the season but i travel 1.5 hours over and down very steep hills at all speeds.

amo 03-05-2009 6:57 AM

I have an Avalanche LTZ and my wife has a Tahoe LTZ and I have very few problems towing my X-Star on flat ground. I would not want to make a habit of towing that boat up and down hills with those SUV's. 4 door Chevy duramax with that Allison tranny is the way to go if you have to tow up and down any kind of hills to get to your lake. I wish I could get rid of my Avalanche and get that Duramax .

ponyh8r 03-05-2009 7:06 AM

Thanks guys. We have a new plan. We are gonna trade her car which is paid for and get a used one. That way she gets what she wants and I keep the ole' Superduty to tow the boat.

Here is what I am looking at.

ttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks___2007-Chevrolet-Tahoe-4WD-LT3-Nav-Roof-DVD-L-K-Lo-Miles_W0QQitemZ110358826761QQddnZCarsQ20Q26Q20Truc ksQQddiZ2282QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash =item110358826761&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_t rkparms=72%3A317%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318#h t_4265wt_1193

That thing is way to nice for a new born. And great decision on keeping your truck!

themxercr85 03-05-2009 11:28 AM

We have an 07 burb LTZ with the 6.1 and it tows our xtar like nothin no problems at all.

ponyh8r 03-05-2009 12:27 PM

Ted,

That one is nice, but she has to have one that is loaded up. I personally don't need all that and would love to help a brother out, but she holds the magic key, if you know what I mean.

Jake,

How is are you guys doing? I will be back in a few weeks. Life is rough here, I mean with the eighty degree weather all the time and miles of buttery water and all. How was the snow this week?

psudy 03-05-2009 12:56 PM

My wife has an older tahoe with the 5.3, and I hated pulling my old xstar with it. It had no balls, but if you are not worried about passing cars and stuff, I guess it would be fine.

nawteek256 03-05-2009 2:51 PM

Mike
It has every option besides rims, nav, and dvd. $26000
No big deal though

clayton191 03-05-2009 8:19 PM

hehateme 03-06-2009 2:16 PM

That Tahoe has more than enough guts. You dont need a diesel to pull that boat.

phatboypimp 03-06-2009 3:19 PM

I had a 5.3L in my 2001 Tahoe - total dog for towing (2001 MC209/X-9) and when I was pulling in the CA heat (90+ degrees) that thing would overheat going over a speedbump. Most comfortable truck I have ever had and loved it for everything else, but 5.3L will give you 50mph at most up any kind of hill. Rode nice with boat in tow.

davomaddo 03-06-2009 4:05 PM

I have the 08 Tahoe Z71. It works just fine towing the Malibu VLX. Sure, a Semi Truck would be better...

tommyg 03-07-2009 6:45 AM

I was tired of having a truck that would totally struggle on the hills...so we made the decision the get the Denali. 6.2 liter with a 6 speed is a much better combo than 5.3 with a 4speed, and worth the extra bucks.

our truck tows like the boat's not even there...

dhcomp 03-07-2009 9:03 AM

If you want to save that trans, put a BIGGER cooler on it. Factory one is small. Get an RV cooler with like a 30,000GVWR rating. Besides that, it will pull fine....just not a diesel

gregg_rossi 03-09-2009 4:39 PM

Tows an X-1 with no problem and I would think it could haul the X-Star also.

(Message edited by gregg_rossi on March 09, 2009)
