I have never really been in the market for a tube but now that I have an underwater housing for my camera I gotta get one for some tube shots. I guess something that is stable without me having to hold on would be best, right?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Video or still camera?

For video I like to have the largest possible tube so I can focus on keeping the camera steady..

For stills pretty much anything will work.

Overall tubes with a flat top allow you to sit on your knees to help absorb some of the shock (key for good video.)

I personally have a 3-man tube (can't recall the name) and it's HUGE! It has three cuts out and I can pretty much stand up in the thing. Plus it has tons of room for drinks and sandwiches (for those extra long shoots.)

These will work:
http://www.hosports.com/product/154243/96755000/_/Bomber_Tube

http://www.hosports.com/product/154243/96750100/_/Extreme_Tube-Red

Thanks for the recommendations! I will be using the tube for shooting video only. It sounds like having a flat surface is key so that is what I will look for. The "Morph" looks awesome! I am guessing that it is pricey, but what isn't in this industry. I am a little paranoid about falling off on a turn around roller and dropping my camera in the lake.

The looks so good. That'd be amazing for videoing people on the slider.

Anybody know how much it costs?

lakemiltonwake08 03-10-2009 6:15 AM

Well if you do hit a roller and fall off..Won't you have an underwater housing anyways?

mikel_j 03-10-2009 11:53 AM

Yea, but what good is a camera in a housing at the bottom of the lake?

sean7791 03-10-2009 1:42 PM

Arn't you able to put some floats or something on it.

dcervenka 03-10-2009 2:06 PM

What kind of video camera and housing do you have? Depending on your combo it may float.. but this varies from housing to housing.

SPL Waterhousing we're primarily designed for the Surfing industry, so they come with a leash that you can attach to your wrist for added safety.

This has some pictures and details on the SPL housings: http://www.norcalsurfers.com/word/features/spl-waterhousings/ the dual video/photo housing is pretty cool!

I have a Sony EX1 with an Eco Marine Housing, the one that looks like a giant ziplock baggie. When I did a test it sunk but I suppose I could seal it with a little more air in the bag. I think I will also steal the leash idea and just tie the housing to my life jacket.

Those SPL housings look real nice!

lakemiltonwake08 03-11-2009 6:37 AM

I figured it floated. If not attach yourself to it with a leash.
