I have tried a lot of things on my boat. what is good product that will clear oxidized fiberglass surfaces? My next option is going to be a new paint job. all my covers have ripped apart from weather. the boat is a 97' but only has 181hrs. paint not so good. I will take pics of it and post to if that would help.

(Message edited by Autotunner69 on March 16, 2008)

If the gel coat is really faded badly, then you might need to wet sand and buff it. If you do a search on here there is lots of good information on how to do it.

The boat improvement show Ship Shape TV restored a severely oxidized boat with Poliglow. I would try this before going to the extreme of wet sanding.

http://www.poliglow-int.com/

First thing I would try... buff the boat w/ some 3M Finesse it. I've had success with it on mildly oxidized gelcoat. Post up a pic of your gelcoat, and we can probably steer you which way to go.

I just did this last weekend and it worked great. Get a bunch of 800 grit wet sandpaper and 2000 grit. Dig in with the 800, grab a fresh sheet frequently, and don't be scared. Next go over it with 2000 grit the same way. Next, buff with oxidation remover (I used Maguires heavy oxidation remover)--this will remove anything that's left, and buff out the sandpaper marks. Finally, buff with boat polish. I was sore all week from all of the sanding, but my boat (black supra that's been oxidizing since 1992) looks like new now. Last year, I tried just going with the buffer and oxidation remover, without much luck. Don't be afraid of the sandpaper, gelcoat is pretty thick.
