What is the F-250 Super Duty Diesel getting for mileage? Thanks

leaks 10-18-2007 8:04 AM

I have an '06 with a 4" lift, and it gets a whopping 12-13.5 at best. When towing my boat it drops to around 9.5-11. <BR>Filled it up this morning with 31 gallons - $105.09 OUCH !!!

curtisco24 10-18-2007 8:23 AM

about 12 is what im hearing.

guido 10-18-2007 8:27 AM

My stock '06 gets 15.5 average. It goes as high as 17 cruising on the freeway and as low as 13 towing. The 15.5 is averaged over 20k of freeway/city driving. Not the greatest, but definitely better than my old lifted Tahoe (which got around 12-13). <BR> <BR>Incidently it's still better than my Mom's stock Saab SUV (based on a trailblazer with the straight 6 cyl). I thought that was kinda sad.

guido 10-18-2007 8:28 AM

FWIW... I wouldn't imaging the '08 would be much different.

05mobiuslsv 10-18-2007 8:43 AM

If you want good mileage look to cummins or duramax..

nasty530 10-18-2007 8:49 AM

I have a 1999 7.3L, I average 15.5 city/17 highway and 12 towing. Truck has some slight mods<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/biggrin.gif" border=0><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65921/512363.jpg" alt="Upload">

05mobiuslsv 10-18-2007 9:00 AM

I like your tires they look like big doughnuts. LOL

nasty530 10-18-2007 9:16 AM

Personally I HATE truxus tires. The have gotten good wear thus far but wander all over the place. After talking to a couple different people, that is just how they drive. I would not recommend them to anyone.

jsxstar 10-18-2007 9:18 AM

I have an 08 f450 with the 6.4 and I am getting about 12 city 15 highway but......... I have the 4.56 gears which gets worse fuel milage.

sanddragon2004 10-18-2007 9:36 AM

00 dodge diesel 35" tires 3" lift <BR>6 speed manual tranmission. <BR>chipped 4" turbo back exhaust <BR> <BR>4:11 gears <BR> <BR>19-23mpg unloaded. 12-16mpg loaded (towing)

nasty530 10-18-2007 9:51 AM

Andy, how do you like the Cummins with the manual transmission? I have heard they are not as fast as the auto but get ALOT better gas mileage.

chas 10-18-2007 10:14 AM

My buddy has a a new F450 and says he is lucky to get 10 mpg

baschralper 10-18-2007 10:24 AM

I'm hearing the same thing as Chas... <BR> <BR>My boss and a few buddies bought the new 250's and 350's and all of them are complaining about thier mileage. All of them are claiming around 10 and under. <BR> <BR>glad I have an 06 getting 15+ mpg.

mnwake476 10-18-2007 10:26 AM

the new 08's have all the emissions crap on them which is killing hp and fuel economy. All the 08 diesel are reporting bad fuel economy numbers especially the fords.

erik_c 10-18-2007 10:44 AM

I heard once they round 20,000 the millage picks up, but thats probaly just hearsay.

byrd 10-18-2007 10:54 AM

My Dad just bought one, 4wd, and he told me that the mileage per gallon is worse than any other F250 he has owned. He is getting between 11-12 doesnt matter if it's city or hwy. In fact he has taken it back and had them do a diagnostics check on it to make sure everything is OK. He is disappointed with the mileage, but happy with everything else.

shane97210 10-18-2007 10:56 AM

The new trucks have a particulate filter, fills up about once a tank. To "clean it out", extra fuel is added after the power stroke to increase exhaust temps and "regen" the filter. Kills the mileage, but is nice to have no black smoke and a very clean exhaust. I have an 07 duramax (with 33" mudders) and am averaging around 14-15mpg with mixed driving. Towing on the highway get around 10-11. Seems to be improving as engine gets broken in but not expecting too much. Still better than a gasser with my heavy foot.

nasty530 10-18-2007 11:02 AM

Shane is correct. This clean out cycle is the reason for the funny looking tailpipe. The duramaxs' do the same thing. During this "clean out cycle" the exhaust heats up dramatically to burn off the deposits. The exhaust tip helps to bring in cold air just before it exits the pipe. This prevents it from buring anyone walking by.

sanddragon2004 10-18-2007 11:29 AM

ITS REALLY NICE. <BR> <BR>although the nv5600 is not my recommendation, Id go with the newer ones the 03 and up 6 speed is the new mercedes transmision and the gear shift pattern is much easier to bang through and drives much nicer. plus they are still making parts for them. <BR> <BR>they stopped making parts for the nv5600 and parts are really hard to get. <BR> <BR>they dont even sell the transmission new through dodge any more. <BR> <BR>far as the motor they are easy to work on with lots of room inside. mods like injectors and exhaust you can pretty much do yourself if you are moderatly skilled at wrenching. <BR> <BR>the dmax injectors take 8hrs to change! ugg! <BR> <BR>i am selling my 00 and plan to get an 03 and up dodge cummins with the 6 next year or 2. <BR> <BR>o ya the manual engines are rated higher power wise but i dont know about them being faster, i would never ever ever get a dodge with an auto unless u planned on buko bucks to rebuild. 6k+ some of my sled pulling buddies have 10k+ in there trans! eew! <BR> <BR>O and any body with a diesel on here Id highly recommend looking into some sort of performance chip! it will increase your milage on average 2-3%

sanddragon2004 10-18-2007 11:32 AM

dang that sucks about the newer fords. makes me glad i own a cummins. <BR> <BR>sure like that huge back seat in the fords though!

sanddragon2004 10-18-2007 11:36 AM

t bag what mods do you have? my buddy just got same truck as you. <BR> <BR>but with the 6 speed and we are putting an evolution in it this weekend. <BR> <BR>100hp 200lb feet.

05mobiuslsv 10-18-2007 12:03 PM

Andy get a mega cab then, nothing compares with the room..

nasty530 10-18-2007 12:14 PM

The edge evolution setup is really sweet. Mods: <BR> <BR>TS Performance 6 position chip <BR>4" exhaust hollow cat straight through muffler <BR>AFE intake <BR>Propane injection <BR>Water/Methanol injection

chris_tige_20v 10-18-2007 12:33 PM

06 F250 <BR>6 inch lift <BR>35 inch tires <BR>11.5 mpg city <BR>14 mpg freeway <BR>same mpg towing my boat. <BR> <BR>but seriously guys we didn't buy these trucks for the mileage. <BR> <BR>as far as duramax or cummings, they just don't compare to the power of the F250. I'll give chevy one thing, the ride really nice

sanddragon2004 10-18-2007 12:38 PM

not a big fan of the mega cab to be honest. I want a long bed. they dont make a mega cab long bed do they? I would be happy with just a standard long bed crew cab.

sanddragon2004 10-18-2007 12:39 PM

propane water and methanol injection as light mods ha? <BR> <BR>lmao!

auto 10-18-2007 12:45 PM

RV Net and the guys I know running 10.8-12 MPG in town and hwy, this is not towing, very disappointing to say the least.

seattle 10-18-2007 12:52 PM

"as far as duramax or cummings, they just don't compare to the power of the F250." <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/rofl.gif" border=0>

shane97210 10-18-2007 12:55 PM

I wouldn't say that any of the 3 diesel engines are more powerful than the others. A few years ago that might have been the case, but check out this test <a href="http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/2007/shootout/hdshootout1.html" target="_blank">http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/2007/shootout/hdshootout1.html</a> <BR>very little difference in the fuel burners loaded or unloaded, but looks like the PSD was a little slower so saying,"they just don't compare to the power of the F250" is quite a stretch<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" border=0>

05mobiuslsv 10-18-2007 1:13 PM

Chris you are on crack, I'd put any modded duramax or cummins against a modded powerjoke.

deuce 10-18-2007 1:23 PM

Not a Ford, but I am getting 14 to 16 and change a tank in my '07 Dodge 1 ton CTD. Same when towing, which I assume is due to the towing being 100% freeway. <BR> <BR>Currently have almost 4K on the engine. <BR> <BR>After this short time owning a diesel, I wonder why I didn't pull the trigger on one years ago.

acurtis_ttu 10-18-2007 1:25 PM

I towed my boat with my brother's 08 king ranch F250 two weeks ago, and was not overly impressed. Gas mileage avg right at 12 going 70mph. For what you have to pay for those, it's not even close to being worth it to me.

nasty530 10-18-2007 1:27 PM

WTF, these threads that turn into this one is better... no this one is better... are getting OLD FAST. The superduty 7.3L are strong motors with pretty good trannys, the new 6.0L are good when they are good and terrible when you get one with issues. The duramax is a good motor and they are lucky enough to have the best tranny in the pack with the Allison 1000. The cummins is probably the strongest motor in the class but definitely the weakest tranny. They are all pretty much equal in stock power and with mods. Do some research and they are all better and worst than eachother depending on what you look at. Everone give it a damn rest with the ish talking please.

wakecrazy21v 10-18-2007 4:23 PM

I have a 07 dodge 4/4 crew cab long bed with the 5.9. Just drove 2435 mls. towing a 07 22ssv appox. 5600lbs with all the stuff in it.I hand calculated each fuel stop and got 11.5mpg avg. Towing with my 02 f150 5.4 with the same boat I got 10.25mpg.Same trip last year.

tyboarder03 10-18-2007 4:25 PM

both 6.0l both tuned and exhausted both can keep up with any modded Cummins or Duramax...they really are all about the same. Ohh and the 04 got anywhere from 11-15mpg... and the new unless you get on it hard gets anywhere from 12-16 <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65921/512492.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65921/512493.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65921/512494.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65921/512495.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR>(Message edited by tyboarder03 on October 18, 2007)

Wow that is crazy surprising to me John, then again....I was getting 8 with my gasser(5.9 360) towing. I get double that now.

nasty530 10-18-2007 5:26 PM

Nice trucks Tyler, I love the dark grey!

10-18-2007 6:15 PM

I have had an 02 Ford 7.3 Powerestroke, 03 Duramax, 04 Dodge Cummins with a 6 speed manual and now a 07 Mega Cab Dually with 5.9 Cummins. The best milage come from the 04 Dodge, with Edge EZ chip, 4" exhaust and AFE intake I was seeing 24-26m/gallon. The 07 has 14000kms and I am getting around 18 with the same mods.

05mobiuslsv 10-18-2007 6:25 PM

tyboarder03 10-18-2007 8:10 PM

nubu you got your pick but they'll both tear ya a new one.

05mobiuslsv 10-18-2007 8:13 PM

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one, might want to start reading up on the cummins. It's been fun though. <BR> <BR>(Message edited by 05mobiuslsv on October 18, 2007)

tyboarder03 10-18-2007 8:17 PM

Why don't you educate me then on the mods done to your truck then? Otherwise I couldn't care less about any stock diesel. It will get burned. so please enlighten me. If you're diesel is packing so much power it should be able to smoke the hummer also(if it's done properly). But you seem shy so no worries.

wakecrazy21v 10-18-2007 8:39 PM

Josh, hand calculated or off the computer. If the computer then I would do both and compare the two.

tyboarder03 10-18-2007 8:40 PM

10-18-2007 9:38 PM

John, I have done both and find the computer reads a little high, usually 2-4 miles/gallon higher than on paper. I gained about 3 miles by installing the cold air intake. It depends on where you fill up as well, I burn purple(dyed) diesel which seems to get a little worse milage. WHen I was getting 24-26 that was driving at 110km/hour. When city driving I was still getting an average of 16-18.

wakecrazy21v 10-18-2007 9:50 PM

Thanks Josh, I have found the same to be ture with my computer. I also plan on installing the cold air intake soon.City for me is 13.5 to14.5 avg. 9000mls. on the truck now.

05mobiuslsv 10-19-2007 6:29 AM

Hi-jack on.... <BR> <BR>Plus or minus for running biodiesel?

tyboarder03 10-19-2007 7:42 AM

minus...worse mileage by a few mpg

sanddragon2004 10-19-2007 7:44 AM

you guys towing little ski boats their really is no savings in fuel economy to owning a diesel. where you benefit owning a diesel is trying to haul heavy loads. like horse trailers, toy haulers or big boats. <BR> <BR>I bought mine to tow my 30' toy hauler. I could not do that with a gas half ton. in fact i cooked the trans on my suburban on the first trip which was why i bought it. <BR> <BR>Really not much savings in a diesel 4x4 over a half ton in my opinion, <BR> <BR>I am just getting my truck back together after cooking 2 clutches and a transmission. when its all said and done ill be into it about 5grand. <BR> <BR>that just zeroed out my fuel savings for the year.

sanddragon2004 10-19-2007 7:48 AM

- running bio on fuel economy and power, <BR> <BR>I def noticed a loss in power when running b100 or b20. <BR> <BR>and my truck ran like doo doo. im waiting for better mixes to come out and see it out for a while. it runs good in the older mechanical injected dodges the the newer ones not so much.

deuce 10-19-2007 7:54 AM

Andy, as I stated above, I am getting almost double the gas mileage in my '07 Dodge 1 ton CTD as I was getting in my '02 Dodge half ton gasser. <BR> <BR>That doesn't even mention how much easier it is to tow. Never having to watch the temps going up and down the MANY passes here locally. Towing those passes with the air blasting when it is 100 degrees outside.... I could go on and on. <BR> <BR>There is not one benefit that I can think of towing with a half ton gasser over a HD diesel....even when talking about 5-6K worth of boat and gear.

sanddragon2004 10-19-2007 7:55 AM

You guys are retarded arguing which truck is better with your videos! <BR> <BR>Dont you kids know its all about $$$ he who spends the most wins! <BR> <BR>Look at the banks dakota. it will smoke any of you guys! but he has prob 200k in it. ok now who wins? <BR> <BR> <BR>they are all good some are better then others. <BR> <BR>Any real diesel enthusiast knows this.

sanddragon2004 10-19-2007 7:57 AM

EJ, <BR> <BR>when u actually crunch the numbers. the cost of maintence its a wash. Unless you just have to be the fastest guy towing. <BR> <BR>i have put 4 years towing with my cummins turbo diesel and the amount of money ive spent on parts and maint it cost way more money in the long run. <BR> <BR>would i go back to towing with a gas truck? prob not. but I tow the 15k trailer every now and then as well.

sanddragon2004 10-19-2007 8:00 AM

O ya an EJ, If i remember corretly dodge started building the new cummins 600 motor ready to run bio from the fatory. so you should be able to run it no problem. Different blends of bio produce diff results. I have mostly noticed a loss in power, and a loss in fuel economy on everything i have run. have not run it in the last year because of it. The newer bio is supposedly better but im still skeptical in the local dealers. I have yet to get any from hippy town santa cruz though! haha.

05mobiuslsv 10-19-2007 8:05 AM

Andy don't be an idiot, might be hard I know. Look at my post dumba$$ I said I was joking around with him, and he was taking me way to serious.

deuce 10-19-2007 8:06 AM

Cost wise, I would not be surprised at all, if it was a wash in the end.... <BR> <BR>However, that being said, if everything is even cost wise, then the diesel wins easily because it is a MUCH better tow vehicle in every other aspect. There would be absolutely no reason to buy a gas vehicle to tow. <BR> <BR>In the end, I have had both....never tow more than 6Kish(though looking at both 5th wheel and camper options) and would NEVER buy gas again. Maybe I would feel different if I lived in the Midwest where towing is flat, but in the mountains......

deuce 10-19-2007 8:09 AM

He is the parts and service manager and hooks me up on both sides... I didn't even shop Chevy/Ford......not because I thought Dodge was better, but because it just didn't make sense.

sanddragon2004 10-19-2007 8:31 AM
