Hull cleaning
 

After sitting in the water on and off this summer the boat has a little yellow haze at the water line. Brought the boat home last night from the cabin to trade in or sell. I am dropping the boat off at a dealer tomorrow and want to wash the boat up.

My question is this: what will take the yellow off the white gelcoat? I know obviously hull cleaner with acid will. Looking for something I can buy today and won't hurt the painted trailer or my blacktop driveway? Idea's? Will vinegar do it? It's not bad just a faint yellow color, not even consistent. Mostly along the waterline.

I used tile cleaner like Tilex to get the brown stain off.. It's a mild acid so wear gloves.. Don't leave it on too long... Rinse it excessively then I used baking soda to neutralize just as a precaution.. Than apply a good coat of McGuire wax.. Good Luck.....

I just use acid and make sure to pre wet the trailer so it dilutes it on contact. Be sure to rinse the trailer thoroughly, it may need a wash and wax after but I've only had luck with an acid to remove the stain. I use the strongest stuff I can get to make the job quick as possible...

If you are using acid to clean a hull, dilute the acid 50-50 with water, it will still take most/all lake scum off without having to worry about your trailer.

I have used these products on my dads boat after it sits in the water all summer. Someone local to you may sell it.

I moor my boat every Summer for 4-5 months and deal with the same yellow haze that you've described...I started detailing cars when I was 15, so I like to test out different products and have 2 options for you.

1. Starbrite Hull Cleaner - my first choice! Spray it on, wipe it off...and literally within 5 minutes, your hull will be sparkling white. It's actually sorta magical because when you wipe it off, you'll still see some of the yellow haze in the hull, but then it disappears! 2. I used SlimyGrimy earlier this Summer and it works well, but you have to scrub the hull with a brush, unlike the Starbrite. I only used it because they do not carry Starbrite at my local hardware store and I wanted to try out this stuff for comparison. I did like the fact that you could spray the SlimyGrimy bottle upside down, to get all the way under the boat.

Definitely apply a good wax once you're done! I would never use a household cleaner on the boat, it may work but it's going to strip away/eat your fiberglass and gel coat over time.
