Can you surf an MB With only stock ballast?
 

I love a lot of features about the MB F22 boat. Is 1800 pounds enough to do it? 900 on each side...

Goofy probably yes, Regular probably no. Prop rotation favors the goofy side. As you add more weight or people (or both!), the wave will probably get better.

I say probably because my experience is with the 23 wb, and you are looking at the F22.

Regular side, yes, but it really comes alive with an extra 1K along the surf side. Like Doggy, ive surfed a 21 and a 23, but not the F22.

We tried the F22 and were going to buy it if it surfed right off the trailer. We loved the boat and more so the price but it did require extra weight for me to surf, 6'2 210 pounds.

That being said it was clean and was a good shape, just not a lot of power or size.

We really liked the F22 as well and could see how it could easily be a great surf boat. Loved the dealer experience but it was a haul to the dealer from our house. so all things considered we stuck with Nautique. Sometimes familiarity wins out too.

If you really want to surf a lot I would price the boat with dealer plumbed rear 750# or so sacks. It will be a bigger upgrade cost than doing plug and play on some of the other boats because you will have to add pumps and switches but as you know the price starts out way, way less.

That is what I'm doing with my F22 this year. Two 1100's in the rear lockers and a Bow sac up front, all plumbed. hopefully be able to get some surf pics within a few weeks.

You should be able to surf just about any inboard. I have personally surfed many direct drive ski boats from 1990-2011. Some even on skim style boards. Its all about technique. Once you can surf a small direct drive wake all other wakes are cake!

Some of these threads are interesting to read because I feel like the average person in all reality won't know the difference between a boat with 1800# of stock ballast or additional ballast. Most of our customers want something that is easy, fast, and works with few problems and hick-ups. The MB F22 will surf just as good as any other big 3 boat on the market. For a $65k boat compared to $130+ you will have just as much fun on an MB with a good wake for a lot less money.

One thing I think MB is missing out on is a surf device. And the reason for that is marketing. A lot of customers looking at buying new boats are asking about ballast and surf devices. I think a few other brands have a leg up on MB because of this, but the MB boats surf on both sides without a ton of weight bc the hull design and boats just work. There is really no need to bolt all these trim tabs and gates on the back. I have ridden the new Axis 24 with surf gate and the upgraded plug and play. I think a first look watching the wave change back and forth is way cool. Behind the boat on the wave i feel like the shape is a little more mellow. I am used to a more steep wake. Here is a pic though.

Lastly, as some of you have seen, MB does have something in the works that will create delayed convergence and work similar to surf gate etc. Also, next year the ballast in all the boats get upgraded to larger tanks and will include more area for bow weight.

MB will have a surf system before summer is over. I was told about 45 days at the earliest.

We picked up our new MB F22 on Saturday, but we have never surfed and will be learning soon.

I'm surprised at the responses here. I would say it will absolutely surf both sides with stock weight. I've seen it myself but we also had 4 people in the boat. In fact I would imagine MB has one of the best stock surf wakes(besides the G series and ASR maybe) due the amount of stock ballast. Most manufactures only have around 200-300lbs on each side in their BASE stock ballast packages.

You can surf the stock wave of an MB just fine.

But remember that

"THERE IS NO RELPACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT"

I have a MB 2014 23wb. Yes you can surf both sides stock we have. But like said above the more weight the bigger the wave and greater the push.

Keep in mind you can also go wake to wake toe side on a tige with 90ft rope.

this is my then 12 year old son surfing bone stock 23wb with only factory ballast and 300 in peeps in the boat.

Is there any consensus on which MB hull is best for surfing? The tomcat is desireable for the pickle fork, but at the end of the day which model and size can you get the best wave out of??

all are the same hull or running surface, except the F24, the B52 23 is the best due to it's length

This is the f22 with 750-800 in the locker and about 300 or so in the bow, 1 passenger, no gear or anything under seats. Picture was taken from observer seat.
