So the other day I was doubling with my friend and we had a mix up in communication and he ended up right behind me for some reason and fell, but when he fell his rope handle got wrapped around my boot and before i knew it was there i let go of my rope and i got dragged about 30 ft. until my board wripped off. Im lucky my ankle didnt break or something

Has this ever happened to anyone? How can we communicate better when doubling?

blake_hughes 08-14-2006 9:30 PM

Just stay away from each other?

-Blake

biz 08-15-2006 8:15 AM

Dragged 30 ft before your board got ripped off? What was the driver and/or spotter doing?

acurtis_ttu 08-15-2006 8:33 AM

Pottsy, no offense , but if your age is correct (profile) , you will continue to do stuff (like this) that will be stupid and crazy, keep your fingers crossed that you make it thru that stage w/o doing any permanent damage. It worked for me. The only way to get better at riding doubles is to ride doubles more and with someone you know.

jeff359 08-15-2006 8:37 AM

Find a better driver/spotter combo, or atleast learn to tell a better story.

pottsy 08-15-2006 8:49 AM

ok just to let you guys know, i asked for advice not criticizm. Always gotta make fun of the beginner

boarditup 08-15-2006 9:02 AM

You still need a good observer, but this would have prevented the problem:

http://www.boarditup.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=350&catid=9

I have seen a few injuries from rope and handles and still have a scar from one of them. We have this on the tower all the time and have used it twice this summer - both times riding doubles.

stepintoliquid 08-15-2006 9:34 AM

You ride on Pistakee lake?

pottsy 08-15-2006 9:37 AM

yea dude, it kinda sucks during the day tho. U wanna get together sometime? I mean that is if u dont mind riding with a newb of course

rodmcinnis 08-15-2006 9:53 AM

TR & Jeff:

23 MPH x 5280 feet per mile =121,440 feet per hour, or 2024 feet per minute, or 33.7 feet per second.

The best observer/driver team in the world wouldn't get the boat stopped in less than a second.

Pottsy:

Riding double always has greater risks. It would help if the lines were the same length so that one can't be behind the other.

newman 08-15-2006 9:56 AM

I wish my boat could go from wakeboard speed to a dead stop in thirty feet.

stepintoliquid 08-15-2006 10:52 AM

Pistakee lake is blown out bad pretty much all the time. I will ride it every once in a while before work, at like 5 AM. When do you usually ride?

pottsy 08-15-2006 11:06 AM

yea, I get out there at 7:00 and ride till around 8:30 or nine, after that its basically impossible... and it doesnt get any better at the end of the day either. We own a house out there so thats the only reason i ride there.

c640947 08-15-2006 12:46 PM

Riding doubles is dangerous and should only be performed by attentive riders. You need to be aware at all times of where the other rider is and what his intentions are, and you need to trust that he is doing the same.

Given that that has already been taken into consideration, maybe rope length was a problem? Was his rope much longer than yours? I personally have never heard of that happening - probably freak accident.

pottsy 08-15-2006 12:49 PM

his line was about 4 feet longer

08-15-2006 12:52 PM

Yea but how many "FREAK" accidents have you heard of this year??

funkytown 08-15-2006 1:36 PM

i was wake surfing. as i was taking up the slack in my left/back hand to get into position, i fell and my arm went through the loops and i got drug around the lake for about 20-30secs by my rist. Ya it hurt...but no damage...other then rope burn, swelling and bruising.

a lesson to all you kids out there: dont take up the slack in you hands when wakesurfing!

stepintoliquid 08-15-2006 1:41 PM

What kind of boat are you in? I have probably seen you out there.

pottsy 08-15-2006 4:12 PM

I go out with my friend in a little speed boat, not sure what it is... but It has no tower so it kinda sucks... and sometimes if i dont go with him I have to ride behind a friggen deck boat... what about you?

biz 08-15-2006 8:47 PM

Rod, thank you for your insight and math. Do you think he actually had a stopwatch timing him?

Pottsy My point is a good/attentive spotter will minimize any injuries and lessen the risk factor. Depending on how much of a newbie you are (and your fellow riders for that matter) i would stay away from tandem/double unless you have a safety release like the one mentioned earlier. And as Rod mentioned, I would go with the lines of same length so an incident such as the one that happened to you will not happen.

stepintoliquid 08-16-2006 7:20 AM

Depends on the day, 06' X-Star, X45, X1, and lately an 04' MB B52 V3. If you see any wakeboard boats with Chicago MasterCraft stickers on it, wave them down its probably me.

chainboy 08-16-2006 8:59 AM

Yo hows it goign guys Im on the chain to but mainly boat on lake marie and bluff and ussually do it early sat+sun+ and around dusk to also do it on monday and tuesdays. If ither of you guys every need a third hit me up please and thanks

pottsy 08-16-2006 9:25 AM

Thanks, wow your able to ride at dusk too on the chain??

uppledup17 08-16-2006 9:33 AM

What's up fellas, next time I spot you out there I will give you a heads up. On the chain too, buddy lives on the river in J-burg. If you see a purple ski Nautique with a tower that's us. Hey Kevin, do you work at Chicago MC. If so, What's Mikey been up to?

jschwart73 08-16-2006 9:35 AM

Don't ride doubles with Umali, he'll run right into you after landing a backroll.

stepintoliquid 08-16-2006 9:40 AM

Adam-Yea I work at Chicago MasterCraft. Mikey's good. Busy helpin out Keith at Raging Buffalo Wakeboard School and at the firehouse. Where do you ride at? I remember seeing a purple Nautique not to long ago by the river.

uppledup17 08-16-2006 9:47 AM

We typically ride right down the river on the mornings. My buddy lives right on the bend in the river that takes you toward McHenry. Look for the house with the Beer signs and the Palm tree at the bend. Otherwise we hit the cove near Freddies or Pistakee. I want to get up to Marie sometime but work is killing me as does Mikey, he's an angry driver on Sunday mornings with Keith. Hilarious. Shoot me an email or I will stop by the shop sometime, would love a pull behind an X-star, though Keith's X-2 is pretty sweet. Sorry for the hijack Pottsy.

pottsy 08-16-2006 11:27 AM

yea, im usually riding in that little cove by freddies... if you go into the little bay right across from it i have a house in there... its gray and theres three parts to it... maybe ill see you guys around

gobigorgohome 08-16-2006 11:46 AM

Quote: a lesson to all you kids out there: dont take up the slack in you hands when wakesurfing!

I think the lesson to be learned from your story is to make sure your driver/spotter is paying attention! 20-30 secs is a long time!

pottsy 08-16-2006 12:33 PM

yea i noticed that too, how do u get dragged for 30 seconds???
