i have a 2006 larson 180 se with a 3.0 L volvo engine, i want to reprop to get a better pull out of the hole and that holds speed better at 3000 rpms or 20-22 mph.
What pitch, material, or number of blades should i go with?

(Message edited by glasshouse on July 22, 2007)

first find out what you have and post it. aluminum 3 blade i assume, find out size and pitch.

ethan31 07-22-2007 5:27 PM

I'd go 17p or 18p 4 blade.

I bet your stock is a 21p 3 blade.

its a 3 blade 14.5 x 9 not sure on the pitch though.

you should be a 14.5x9 21p. I have been told to run a 4 blade same size and pitch and it will make alot of difference. Let me know because I have a 07 fourwinns 3.0l volvo package same everything as you and I am thinking about a new prop

4 blade 19 pitch.. done deal! I have the same motor and it makes the world of difference.. jumps out of the whole and just a little lower top end.. I can now have 6 people in the boat and run my sacs with fast plane times..

I recommend the Mercury Highfive Prop. Best prop for the money on an I/O if you ask me. I used that on two I/O's I had before seeing the light. You can find them new on ebay for $415ish. I bought two there.

No way to know what you need until you tell us what you run now and what the WOT RPM is?

I second the HIFIVE! The holeshot is awesome, it is much more responsive to fine throttle adjustments and it does not ventilate at all like the 3-blade Mercury Vengance 19P prop we were running.
We did however loose 10mph at Wide Open Throttle at 4,800 rpm but who cares we run 22mph all of the time to ride!
E-bay store where we got ours.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MERCURY-HIGHFIVE-BOAT-PROPELLER-17-PITCH_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ26456QQihZ011QQit emZ320138763430QQtcZphoto

On a 3.0L, I ran with a 15 pitch 3 blade or a 16 pitch 4 blade prop. Couldn't really say one was better than the other. I have no experience with hi5s but people really seem to love them.

Scott Root: I bought two props from that exact same ebay shop. So I guess Matthew has positive feedback from two people from that seller. I definitely agree on holeshot and responsiveness. I didn't loose but 2mph on top end. I had a 2004 Glastron SX195 with the 5.0 MPI. From the 3 blade aluminum to the highfive I lost 2mph and gained massive holeshot and throttle response. Especially great at lower speeds and stayed on plane easily.

Kevin
It would be helpful if you would say from what prop and pitch that you went to!
I went from a 19P 3-blade to a 17P 5-blade!
The HIFIVE has made our STINKIN IO way more easy to adjust speed and to teach new drivers!
Scott

http://sites.mercurymarine.com/portal/page?_pageid=126,51607,126_51617&_dad=portal&a mp;_schema=PORTAL

Mercury suggests if you have a 19P 3 blade you stay with a 19" five blade. I went from 23P to 23P. I had high altitude gear set living in Colorado. That is why the high pitch. It is all relative.

sroot1 07-25-2007 9:04 AM

I was lucky enough to be able to demo both the 19P and the 17P HIFIVE from a dealer.
While the 19P HIFIVE was better than the 3-blade 19P Mercury Vengance prop it was only very slight! but the 17P was fantastic and still kept us within our WOT range.

Kevin! Happy mile Hi ridin!
Scott

Would that HIFIVE help me out as well? 94 reinell w/5.0 and alpha one outboard. Seems like it takes forever to get out of the water and up to speed

glasshouse 07-25-2007 9:24 PM

i ended up puttin a 4 blade 14.5x8 17 pitch, and my boat planes out in like 2 seconds, didnt get to check the wot speed though. so thanks for all the help!

sroot1 07-26-2007 7:52 AM

Trevor that is the same engine and drive combo as our boat so I am sure it would work.
Matthew let us know how the 4-blade works out and what make and model it is.
The big thing we like with the HIFIVE is just how easy it is to maintain speed with small adjustments and how quickly it reacts. Our perfect pass now stays within two tenths instead of wild surges.
We also went from 4 gallons of fuel an hour to 3. I think just because were not having to pump the throttle as much to hold speed.
Oh I feel so GREEN now like I am driving a lttle hybryd boat!
Scott
