I've tried 4 raleys!

On on attempt I slipped out of the binding and landed in the raley-position!! But by all other attemps I landed on my board!!

greets from austria

It all depends on how close you get to landing back on your board. I've had some bad crashes, where I buried the TS edge, and I crashed liked no other. Then, on the other hand, I've come pretty close to getting the board back underneath me, and those crashes hurt no more than a normal W2W jump gone bad.

My suggestion is that you use a wakeskate, if you are thinking, "I'd like to try a raley." After you get the general idea, go ahead strap on your board, and give it hell... Or, if you want to see just how bad it hurts, go ahead and bust one out. Let us know how it goes... it should be pretty funny.

-Blake
Its been my experience that yes they hurt. I dont know about the wakeskate idea Ive never tried that way, I always just figure go for, if it hurts or should I say when it hurts, do it different next time. Sooner or later it wont hurt anymore and chances are that means youve got it. Just let em hang and try one, then decide for yourself if you are willing to suck it up and go through a little pain to learn something new. And if nothing else your buddies in the boat get a good show.

I guess Jake is a lot tougher than me, and most of the riders I know. The wakeskate is the best idea that has ever come along, for those attempting the raley. When I made my 1st attempts at the raley, I sacked up and did it with the board on. It hurt pretty bad, and I found that on the attempts following that one, I wouldn't push myself to take it big like you are supposed to. Call me weak, but once you take a face plant that fast, and that hard, you'll understand what I mean. Do yourself a favor, try it on a wakeskate 1st. Once you've stretched out, and pulled your feet completely back underneath you (to where you land in a seated position) strap on your board, and give it a try. If you don't, you'll find that it's going to take you a lot longer to land one.

-Blake

Here's a recent practice run at the elusive raley, on a wakeskate. Sorry, I know the picture isn't of the greatest quality, but it's all I've got.

-Blake

(Message edited by blake_hughes on August 24, 2004)

Maybe this one is a little better. Oh yeah, when your feet aren't straped in, it's a little hard to control where they go... My leg almost looks broken!

-Blake

(Message edited by blake_hughes on August 24, 2004)

Those pics are awesome, I think a raley might even look cooler without the board. Thats good height for a wakeskate. Ive only tried a wakeskate 2 times but I couldnt get enough of a carve to get enough pop (no fins) to even think about trying a raley. I can definately see where it would be helpful to learn it that way first. As for trying it with the board first its not a tough guy thing, its simply a matter of not having another option and still wanting it bad. For me half the thrill of this sport is that twisting you get in your stomach any time you so much as think about whatever new trick you are trying to learn. Even if you are just sitting at you desk reading about it. Thats how you know you really want it and your challenging yourself.
I havent had any luck landing a raley yet but have tried several now and am getting close. Even those times that I dont make it and fold myself up on the water give me the one thing we are really looking for, the adrenaline rush you get from staring down the wake and convincing yourself to go for it!
Aside from that there are a couple of really good threads here with tips on how to do a raley.
Most of them I suspect written by people who can actually land them so I would take my point of view with a grain of salt. Oh yeah and this attitude did cause me to miss half of last season due to injury, it happens when you push yourself.

Jake,

I know what you mean about not being able to get a hard enough cut for a raley, without fins. The 3rd picture is of me trying it without fins on my buddies wakeskate. The 1st two, were taken after I stole a 1.1" fin off one of our boards, and somehow made it work. You can see there's a bit of a difference in height, and distance.

I wasn't knocking you for not trying the raley on a wakeskate 1st... Hell, my 1st attempts weren't on a wakeskate. I just wanted to let ya'll know that you can progress yourself a lot faster, on this trick, with a wakeskate, and save some of those irriatating headaches for another trick.

Amen to that adrenaline rush... I get stoked after a hard fall (if I'm not hurt), especially one that was generated by hitting the wake as hard as you can. Good luck to ya'll that are trying the raley. If I could give any other advice, it'd be to come in a little heavy on the front foot... You'll see a huge difference.

-Blake
