How far do you commute?

Just curious to see how far everyone has to drive to work everyday. I've been interning for a company this summer that is located about 70 miles away. Outside of burning through 2 tanks of gas a week, I really don't mind it as much as I would of thought.

trace 07-22-2010 6:49 PM

I commuted 50 miles each way for about 7 years. I wouldn't do it now that I have a family. It's a lot of your life wasted staring at a windshield.

wakeboardingdad 07-22-2010 7:32 PM

Mine is about 20 miles each way. 15 minutes late in the morning and it costs me an additional 10 mins. Usual commute is about 30 mins if I time it right.

tro 07-22-2010 7:43 PM

6 miles each way right now. 35 miles is the most i'll commute and thinking about moving to start doing it. but 35 miles down here in houston takes 1 hour in the morning and 35 minutes in the evening. if there's a wreck, maybe 1.5 hours in the morning.

i commuted 65 miles each way while in school.

jetskiprosx 07-22-2010 8:22 PM

Used to commute 55 miles each way. Did it for almost 2 years and hated every minute of it! You wouldn't think it, but stressful heavy traffic driving is tiring.

I now commute (if I can call it that) 5 miles each way. My drive went from 1hr 15 minutes to 10 minutes. Without trying to sound cheesy, it totally changed my life for the better! Not tired/grumpy when I get home from work. Get to sleep in an hour later and get home an hour earlier. Instead of filling up every 3 days it's every 3 weeks!

I will never commute again!

fly135 07-22-2010 8:26 PM

I used to commute 300' to work. But the company moved it's office 7.5 miles away.

ritchieps190 07-22-2010 8:44 PM

My commute can be as short as 15 feet and as long as 162 miles. Makes for a long day when I have to round trip the 162 mile commute in the same day.

mnwakepuck 07-22-2010 8:54 PM

WIsh I had a job right now (recent grad) haha......

clayton191 07-22-2010 9:13 PM

Basically -- 22 foot steps into my office from my bedroom.

Thoughts about working at home? I'd love to share them. Sounds great, it really does -- but its always greener on the other side. Guess what, your personal hygiene goes to ****, you feel paranoid that people are talking about you, plotting against you in the home office, your wife / newborn child will decide to scream, **** themselves, or freak out about laundry during important conference calls. You lose track of cool songs on the radio. Your staff is hard to manage. Your idea of a good time is taking a 15 minute break to check wakeworld hoping SOMEONE wants to talk to you.

I'm not against working at home -- I'm against working for someone else in your own home. If I could feel like I could go to the gym, take lunch, maybe hit up xbox during the day, it'd be a lot better -- but its not. It's stressful sometimes!

Just for clarification - I lead technology for the company I work for -- basically lead / develop software / do product development.

elc 07-22-2010 9:34 PM

Only about 12 miles but 45 f'n minutes... lovely Socal traffic

pesos 07-22-2010 9:42 PM

did it for a few years - never again. now i just go downstairs

chris4x4gill2 07-23-2010 5:34 AM

I have 25 miles. Almost all Interstate and no traffic.

baitkiller 07-23-2010 5:44 AM

I watched my father commute from the AV to Burbank for 15 years. No way baby. Every day is different for me, today is the office, Monday on a plane to new England, home Tuesday and work the local marina the rest of the week.
I hauled ass out of Cali in '85 and haven't looked back.

deuce 07-23-2010 6:13 AM

10 miles, takes me about 15 minutes door to door.... I bike commute it in 30 when I ride.....

flattirenotube 07-23-2010 6:35 AM

100 miles each way. I work construction and for the last year I've been on a project thats pretty far from home. I get compensated for the commute though. Never again though, I should have just moved.

jarrod 07-23-2010 6:45 AM

25 minutes in the morning, 45 on the way home.

I actually a little commute. give me some time to wake up, caffiene up, little music.

Worked at home for about 4 years. It was great, but as mentioned above, it can be tough.

sidekicknicholas 07-23-2010 7:00 AM

25 miles takes me about 30 mins door to door.... one great think about living in the sticks.... no traffic. I got slowed down today by a ****load of turkeys in the road.

I like it too, just long enough, not to long.... but then again I don't deal with traffic... I hate traffic

I worked for myself as a software consultant for 6 years in the tech boom of the 90's. Working at home I found myself playing to much online Age of Empires:p

But it was so lucrative back then that I could work half a day and make plenty of money. When I got a contract at a local company about 25 miles away, they said I could work at home. But I needed a break from home and chose to drive there every day. It's nice to work with people who are skilled. You can exchange ideas and learn from each other.

scotthons 07-23-2010 7:46 AM

I used to work in downtown Los Angeles and it was only 18 miles away, but would take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. I got out of California and now my commute is 7 miles and maybe 12 minutes if I hit too many lights.

behindtheboat 07-23-2010 7:54 AM

15-20min, 12-15 miles

aarond0083 07-23-2010 8:02 AM

95 miles round trip but only three days a week. I don't hit traffic often so it's usually 45 minutes each way. The other two days I work from home. Ideally for me would be three days at home and two days commuting.

0klahoma_Breakdown 07-23-2010 8:04 AM

32 miles and it is generally a reverse commute. I can do it in 35 minutes in the morning and around 45 in the afternoon.

duramat 07-23-2010 8:10 AM

I fly 3000 miles to work. Do a 2 week hitch and fly 3000 back. :)

mendo247 07-23-2010 8:39 AM

5 Minutes. It has its good and bad qualities. I wouldnt mind a fifteen minute or half hour commute at all. I like being in the car/truck listenning to the radio. I also think that 15-30 minutes really gives you time to wake up on the way and also wind down after work. Sometimes I'll have a bad day at work and when I get home Im still pissed off lol seems like driving 15-30 minutes really calmed me down before I got home lol

^^ Very True

I now have a 12 mile commute to my office, used to work from home. All of my employees work remotely, but with 2 kids, a third on the way, 2 dogs, 2 cats and god knows what else, even having 7k sq ft was not enough room to be able to be productive working from home.

jay_g 07-23-2010 10:25 AM

I make a right out of my bedroom and a left into my home office. Usually takes about 10 seconds, but sometimes a make a detour to the kitchen for coffee and a bagel

jarrod 07-23-2010 10:33 AM

My boss lives in AZ. Every monday he flies to SFO, works mon-thursday, and flies back home friday.

shane97210 07-23-2010 10:40 AM

I work from home 75% of the time. Like was said above, grass isn't always greener on the other side. i look forward to when i have to drive 30 minutes to our manufacturing facility a day or two a week. The upside of working at home is when its gonna be a boat or golf day, there are no office distractions and i can crank out what i need to get done pretty quickly and get out by noon.

I used to live in DC and commute 12 miles each way that took an hour or so, never again will i do that. That is around 500 hours a year wasted behind the wheel.

Yea, Uhh DC Sucks... My 12 mile commute takes me at most 25 minutes and that is including a stop to grab a couple bagels and a coffee at Brueggers...

95sn 07-23-2010 10:49 AM

Almost a mile. I moved close to avoid a commute.

guido 07-23-2010 10:55 AM

8 miles each way. 15 minutes by car, 25 minutes by bike. I love it. The furthest I'd go is 15 miles. I've gotta be in comfortable range to ride my bike to/from for me to be OK with it.

bruizza 07-23-2010 12:20 PM

I am the same as guido 8 miles each way and it takes 15 minutes.

bmcgee 07-23-2010 12:36 PM

I'll agree to the morning drive gives you time to wake up. The ride home can go either way. If I had a bad day at work, I can get pretty frustrated with the traffic. On a good day I can make the 70 mile drive in about an hour and 15 minutes, but road construction has been slowing me down a bit for the last month or so. On my way in in this morning I counted 31 miles of construction zones divided up over the 3 highways I take to get here.

buzz_grande 07-23-2010 12:48 PM

I have been commuting 28 miles each way for a while now. From small town inland, to the very busy beach area in San Diego. Moving in a few days another 19 miles farther out into the mountails. Not too bad because I ride my motorcycle. Great on gas, fun mountain roads, great when I hit the rush hour traffic, great when the beach roads are all jammed up, great when the parking lots are closed due to crowding, etc.

bond 07-23-2010 3:14 PM

Three - (3) blocks & loven it...

load 07-23-2010 3:58 PM

30 miles each way, 45 minutes to 1hr mostly. of course only 15 minutes to the Delta though.

misteve 07-25-2010 2:37 PM

10 miles, 15-20 min

jtnz 07-25-2010 4:59 PM

About 5 miles most days, no traffic at all I live in a rural area. Some days if I go to see customers I might have between a half hour to hour and a half crawl in the traffic to get home though, I try to avoid going to town in the morning...

jason_ssr 07-26-2010 7:10 AM

35 miles each way. Worth it for me to get away from the city. Im in a quiet subdivision now. Im looking at rural land at about the same distance from work (other side of town). I dont mind the commute in exchange for the tranquility at home.

parkgirl 07-26-2010 9:58 AM

17 miles, 25-30 minutes. Like Jarrod I enjoy it, time to wake-up on the way, and unwind on the drive home. 5 minutes from the Delta.

kstateskier 07-26-2010 11:53 AM

22 miles in 30 minutes. Did the 55 mile commute each way for over a year and it was no fun. From one side of St. Louis to another when one of the main east west roads was closed, no fun at all.

eubanks01 07-26-2010 3:35 PM

22 miles. With no traffic it can be done in 20 minutes. But I take the train so the total time (parking, walking, waiting, riding, walking, etc.) is about 55 minutues door-to-door. Driving on a bad day can be 1.5 hours but typical traffic day driving is an hour.

I would love to work closer to home at some point. Not driving is relaxing, but there is something nice about being in a car by yourself to start and wind down your day.

fatsac 07-27-2010 11:22 AM

2.5 miles and I never see the highway...heaven!
The one aspect I really notice is feeling overwhelmed the rare occassion I'm in heavy traffic or on the freeway.
Leaving for a 2500 mile road trip this Thursday, so I'm sure it'll shake the cobwebs out!

psudy 07-28-2010 7:37 AM

1 mile.

zo1 07-28-2010 12:23 PM

This is awesome, going to look at new office space tomorrow, only 5 miles from home and that five miles only includes 3 stop lights... Hope it pans out!

newmy79 07-29-2010 8:58 AM

8 miles one-way, 16 R/T. :)

sidekicknicholas 07-29-2010 10:51 AM

Just found out this maybe a new possibility for me:
Since I have 15 credits to finish I planned on going back to school for a year (have to due to the way things fell).... but where I am working wants to keep me on, so they may have me drop down to 6 or so credits and work for them 2/3 days a week.... that would mean 140miles - 1 way - up to two times a week.

tinytdubb 07-30-2010 10:44 AM

10-15 minutes each way on my bike 5 times a months. Can't beat it.

bcoppinger 07-30-2010 11:15 AM

47 miles each way.

onthewatermo 07-30-2010 11:31 AM

20 miles all highway if I go by land and I cross two bridges over Lake Ozark/pass the performance powerboat shop or 1 mile by water with a 5 mile bike ride after.

iridelow1998 07-30-2010 5:45 PM

25 miles = 1/2 hour drive time each way 3 days a week

cadunkle 08-02-2010 12:06 PM

3 miles round trip.

Years ago I used to do 165 miles round trip. If I left 10 mins earlier from home I'd get to work 45 minutes sooner, missing the worst traffic of the drive (had to go through the city). lol

wazzy 08-04-2010 10:14 AM

used to be roughly 1 mile each way. but now with this new company its 67 miles each way.

jonnymatrix5 08-04-2010 10:33 AM

3 mins each way.... walking! I love my commute!

dirtrider 08-04-2010 10:45 AM

54 Miles each way.
Takes about 45 minutes to an hour each way.
Doesn't bother me but I don't want to do it forever.
