Using a Clarion EQ instead of a WS-420?

I'm looking at buying the Clarion EQS746 to control the volumes of my tower speakers and boat speakers seperately and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it? I'd love to have the ws-420 but my budget isn't that high and $50 compared to $300 is a big difference. I did a search on here and found where someone was saying something about the lowpass filter only being selectable between 60 and 90 hz and how that's not compatible with boats. Honestly that sounds like it's in a different language to me. Can anyone help me out?

I've been rockin them since 06 when I built my system and they have served very well. I stacked them on top of each other because they are half-din size, so two fit in the space of a 1-din head unit, nice and compact. These are what Wetsounds were recommending before they developed the 420.

Why do you use two of them if you don't mind me asking?

you_da_man 06-06-2010 8:16 PM

I believe people were using two of these because one can tune the cabin speakers and the other can tune the tower speakers. This is what alot of people were doing before the WS420 came out.

Exactomundo. AJ beat me to it. Full ability to tune and control volume for each area separately.

OK i understand now. Well I have a sony cdx-m10 headunit that came with the boat and it has 2-channel preamp outputs (selectable subwoofer mode), according to crutchfield. I'm guessing I can hook the output to the EQ and then EQ to amp for tower speakers and amp for cabin speakers. I would then be able to control volume of both but only be able to tune one. Is that right?

I don't know how to post a pic but i'd like to do it like page 11 in the manual. I guess instead of sub amp it would be tower amp. Would that work?

I've sued them in the past with marginal sucess. My boat stays on a lift year round ( high humidity environment) I was replacing mine about every year due to mositure issues resulting in random noise thru my speakers. replace the eq noise would dissapear. I haev since removed them all together.

redm1496 06-07-2010 8:00 AM

Well that's not what I'm wanting to hear. Well does my setup at least sound right? If i have the tower speakers on the sub volume control on the EQ will that screw up my sound quality?

newty 06-07-2010 8:47 AM

They work well for a while but again noise issues will soon drive you nuts because of degradation from moisure.

redm1496 06-07-2010 9:10 AM

Well all I care about is being able to control my tower speakers and cabin speakers independently. My head unit only has one set of preamp outputs. Could I split those and then put a PAC LC-1 on each and then run a set of rca's to each amp? In my mind that would work but that doesn't always equal out to reality.

redm1496 06-07-2010 11:17 AM

Ok been thinking and new plan. what about connecting front two channels from the head unit through a jl audio cl-rlc then to a kicker zx850.2 out to my two krypt tower speakers? then my headunit has the rear out rca's going to a pac lc-1 then to my amp for my cabin speaker. Does that sound like it would work ok?

redm-

Ajholt posted a link above. Since you are driven by budget constraint, and since it is shared once in this thread already, let me direct you to a press release on the Kicker ZXM-RLC, specifically a press release here on the WakeWorkd Website.

Check it out, it might give you everythig you need.

Holler if you have any questions.

Phil, that sounds like exactly what I need but when is it going to be available? I'd really like to have all this stuff on for the 4th.

philwsailz 06-07-2010 12:06 PM

The 4th might be tight. Check with David at Earmark; he has some on order I think and will likely be the first store to get any, Try e-mailing him to see what you can find out. I am expecting them hopefully late this month.

That Kicker unit would certainly work but you just cant tune freqencies independantly like if you needed to tune your tower speakers to be less "brite", or whatever. The EQ offers a bit more adjustibility ability.

Silverbullet555 06-07-2010 8:41 PM

I bought the clarion EQ which is going in my current install. If it goes bad, my budget should allow for the upgrade to something else.

wake_upppp 06-07-2010 9:15 PM

Mine are going into their 4th season, no problems but my boat stays dry inside, especially the dash and stereo system electronics. Every nite I plug in a cord that turns on my on-board charger, thermostaticaly controlled heater pointing at the engine, (winter time only) and a small fan set on low circulatiing air around my EQ's, deck and amps. Not a sign of a drop of condensation or moisture ever anywhwere in that area. Storing outside is a bitch but I got it down to a science. LOL
