Head Units

Anyone use a regular car head unit in boat instead of a "water proof" HU? I know that I do not let the interior of my boat get wet, other than normal, and it is under the dash. I think that the Sony head unit that I have is giving my Wet Sounds a hard time with radio noise. I could tap on the head unit and hear thumps in my tower speakers.

BTW, I am looking at the Alpine iDAX-305S.

It's pretty common to use regular car head units in boats. HUs seem to last me about 5 seasons in a boat, regardless of whether they're car or marine spec.

Although, engine noise is usually caused by the grounding source, or having the RCA's run right next to power cables. The thump when you tap on the unit is probably just the RCA connections at the back of the HU.
