water was 50, air was 50.
not the coldest ive ever riden in but heres what i just had to go thru.
first, i took a 20-30 min set because the owner of the lake i was riding at wanted some arial shots of the lake with people riding it.
then, literally right after me and two other guys had to sink a slalom course. the lake we were at had 2 courses and buoys set up for the ski jump. i was in the water for at least an hour trying to get all the buoys sunk. then we had to get the water trampoline out.
pretty sure i was close to dying of hypothermia.
thats why i like wakeboarding, we dont need 35 buoys to take a run.

Meh, each to his own

scott_a 10-10-2009 4:31 PM

And I'm sure skiers laugh at the idea of needing 4,000lbs of ballast just to take a set.

rmcronin 10-11-2009 2:19 PM

Oh yeah, I forgot about those of you with the socks! Definitely the #1 way to give wakeboarding a bad name.

all_board_rider 10-11-2009 2:49 PM

^^ explain how that is the #1 way to give wakeboarding a bad name...

DUDES YOU SKI... Enough SAID

use of what sounds to be a private lake like Placid Waters is a pretty fortunate opportunity. It takes more than one person to ski/ride, give thanks.

watson_134_lf 10-11-2009 9:00 PM

oh dude, im super stoked karl lets us use his lakes, dont get me wrong.
just this whole slalom course thing is pretty lame, but it was a small price to pay for such an awesome setup.

boarditup 10-12-2009 7:14 AM

Thanks to everyone who helped!

It is really hard to make this work alone. For those who don't know, I let GVSU waterski team use the lakes at no charge in exchange for the labor of maintaining the lakes (buoys, jump, docks, scaffolding, trampoline, etc.)

GVSU, in the third year of the ski team, came in 10th at Midwest Regionals. Great performance! This past weekend was the majority of the time to maintain the lakes. A bit more to do, but just a few hours of labor remain. Next spring, the reverse happens. Buoys up, jump installed, scaffolding up, cameras in place, trampoline installed, etc.).

We are looking at the potential of a combined pro waterski and wakeboard stop next year! Massive weekend event!

Boo hoo... you don't like it, invent a better solution. As for me? I like to hit some mad cuts on a slalom course with my wakeboard now and again.

wakeslife 10-14-2009 8:23 AM

Stop crying kid, you're extremely lucky to have that kind of setup. Its amazing what people take for granted these days...

Lighten up on Alex. Great guy to have around and hang with. This season was his first introduction to slalom. It is a very different sport than wakeboarding. As a rider who does both and has over 20-years of experience on both, I still get a charge out of each ride. As a wakeboarder, you may not "get" slalom skiing, but it is a lot of fun to accelerate to about 70 mph and back down to 36 in under 3-seconds. The run is a very intense 17-seconds. That said, most die-hard slalom skiers don't get the freedom that comes with wakeboarding.

Skiing without buoys is kinda boring, skiing with buoys, now that is a rush, much like flying through the air and landing 20 feet in the flats. Going into 39.5 off is crazy hard and you just have to respect that. I use to ski with Marcus Brown, and i can tell you its fun to watch.

Now back to the wakeboarding talk
