I have had four boats in my life and this is the first time I have received a Sac County Assessor Vessel Owner's report to fill out. Has anyone else had to do this and does anyone know the consequences if I just throw it in the trash....Kind of ridiculous if you ask me, but standard procedure for California

dabell 09-18-2007 8:31 AM

Yes we got one and yes, you will get a bill for the next 7 years from my understanding. If you don't turn it in, then the accessors office will take guesses at the cost of your new boat. Not a good thing if they decide to use the higher rates.

I agree, this is another tax that CA has and it's BS IMO.

bmartin 09-18-2007 9:02 AM

You are not alone in Cali. GA had a similar tax, but you could get out of it if you docked/stored your boat in another state. Here in Arkansas I am not aware of a way around it.

kcampos 09-18-2007 9:04 AM

you will get an unsecured property tax lien against your house if you don't pay it. Do you store the boat at your house?

jcurtis 09-18-2007 9:20 AM

Ken,

I store it in various places, depends on what time of the year it is.....oh well, another california tax....

bazel 09-18-2007 10:49 AM

Is this on top of the Sales Tax paid? That is crazy.

Socialism at it's best!!

wakefish 09-18-2007 11:16 AM

I must have missed my bill in July and just received a lein on my property unless I pay the 475 with in a week

hp_inc 09-18-2007 11:26 AM

From my understanding and my multiple past boats and dealings with the same county...you never get a bill. You only get the "you are about to be late notice" We used to get one every year until I moved to a different county. I think they call it a luxury tax. Gotta love it.

kcampos 09-18-2007 11:28 AM

as long as the boat is stored at your house every year you'll have to pay that. It's a seperate tax.

javony 09-18-2007 1:08 PM

So what if the boat is kept in storage somewhere besides your house?

clearlakescott 09-18-2007 1:56 PM

We pay it in luxury tax here. Every dollar over 30,000 they get you for. The good thing is it is a one time tax the bad thing is it was steep.

monkey 09-18-2007 1:58 PM

Time for another tea party?

sup208 09-18-2007 2:33 PM

You pay the tax based on the country where the boat is registered. My wakeboard boat is registered in Sacramento county and I get a tax bill every year from the assesors office. My houseboat is in Butte county so i get a tax bill from them for it. The intersting thing to note is that the tax is based on ownership on Jan 1st of the year so, if you bought the boat in May and sold it in november you would not have to pay the tax provided you have all of the sales documentation. If you bought the boat Dec 31 and sold it Jan 30 you will get a tax bill that you are liable for, unless you are a dealer. That is how it works in California.

1boarder_kevin 09-18-2007 3:10 PM

In SC, tax on the purchase is limited to $300. My county ate me up on the boat (property) taxes at $550 for the year

monkey 09-18-2007 3:44 PM

So, my question is, will anyone remember how it felt to pay unfair taxes during the next election? Or will we just all decide that whatever the latest cause is, it justifies raising taxes even more... or decide that if the tax doesn't specifically apply to us, then it's got to be OK...

kcampos 09-18-2007 4:30 PM

Ok i got my facts mixed up. It doesn't matter where you store it as long as you are the owner you are going to get hit with that unsecured property tax. It's the same thing with airplanes, if you are the owner of an airplane or boat you are going to have to pay an annual unsecured property tax and if you do not pay it they will put a lien against your house and if you don't own a house then you shouldn't be out buying airplanes or boats.

K.B.C. 09-18-2007 4:37 PM

It doesn't matter where the boat is stored in Cali. If you're a resident of the county and you own a boat you pay the tax. Trust me, I tried to get out of it.

monkey 09-18-2007 4:56 PM

Scott, what if I'm a resident of CA but own a house in AZ, and register the boat there? Is that what you tried? Would CA still try to tax me on it?

Anyway, I was going to do that, but didn't think it was worth the effort for the 1/2 of a percent, or whatever it is they charge. It's more of a slap-in-the-face-type of reminder that the politicians think they own us all and that they grant us our freedom on a per-case-basis... It's not a major expense.

darinmg 09-18-2007 6:27 PM

I registered my boat in Az, but I live in CA. All you have to do is claim it is used at the colorado river most of the time, and no questions asked. This gets you out of paying the sales tax, not the property tax.
Az is wise to this, and they raised registration from $35 to $245 for out of state people. This is still better than paying the 3-5K in taxes on your used boat.

auto 09-18-2007 6:32 PM

why do you people keep electing these no talent ass clowns?

stewart 09-18-2007 7:33 PM

It's Kalifornia!

zacky 09-18-2007 7:40 PM

To add insult to injury, the sales tax you paid on your boat is used to figure the boat's value. So, if you paid $40,000 for your boat, tax and lic. would be roughly $4,000. Now your boat is worth $44,000 in the eyes of the tax man. Nothing like paying taxes on sales tax you already paid...

dukeno1 09-19-2007 8:31 AM

"no talent ass clowns"

Shane, what movie is that from? I know I saw it but can't remember....Office space maybe?

jrodski 09-19-2007 9:25 AM

Michael Bolton: Yeah, well at least your name isn't Michael Bolton.

Samir: You know there's nothing wrong with that name.

Michael Bolton: There was nothing wrong with it... until I was about 12 years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys.

Samir: Hmm... well why don't you just go by Mike instead of Michael?

Michael Bolton: No way. Why should I change? He's the one who sucks.

Classic!!! LOL

monkey 09-19-2007 9:55 AM

We only elected them once. That's all it took. After that, they carved up the voting districts like a wagon wheel, so they'd never have to leave.

dirty30 09-19-2007 10:01 AM

ya sucks i just paid 557 in sacramento....its not luxury to own a x 30 i make payments just like any other vehicle...dam taxes...had to vent

kcampos 09-19-2007 10:12 AM

Dirty30 you better believe it's a luxury to own an X30 most people can't even afford a boat let alone an x30. Boats are luxuries and it's a luxury i love to have

auto 09-19-2007 10:12 AM

Tim, you are correct, it is Office Space.

nautiquesonly 09-19-2007 10:14 AM

Hey,
I used to own an airplane and it is similar to a boat. If you guys want around personal property tax register you stuff in delaware. We used a service called harvard business solutions and opened an LLC for our aircraft in delaware. We payed no sales tax on the purchase and no personal property tax. The place charged a flat fee of about 300 a year to keep you a post office box in Delaware and forward pertinent mail to you. I also believe texas and tennessee also do not charge prop taxes

dukeno1 09-19-2007 10:59 AM

Thanks!

Funny as hell movie!
