We're wakeboarders, but Surfin' newbies. Have CWB Razr 5.0, and also tried a friends 5'6" Venture. Have a surfrope and Tige24ve, Taps set@ 8, 10mph, no other ballast besides maybe 300# of people sitting on the side of the boat where the person is surfing. (Sorry, no pictures of us surfing or wake.) We've watched the video from CWB, and lots of Youtube videos.

We are surfing toeside facing the wake WITH lifejackets on.

Me (6' 195) and kids (17 yr old @ 5'10" 150 and 13 yr old @ 5'4" 130) easily got up, pulled into the wave, but couldn't find the sweet spot with either board. Razr faster, twitchier. Venture more stable--semi sluggish.

Surfed both Saturday and Sunday. We all started out with too much weight on back foot like wakeboarding, and trying to learn/find the balance thing.

I know we'll get it with practice, but looking for the "ah-ha!" moment.

Questions:

1. Wake/Ballast
@ 10mph, TAPS 8, no other ballast, wake looks big/tall like other pics I've seen on this and other sites, but maybe not long. With more people/ballast I know we'll be able to get it more focused. My hope with a 24ve I should be able to surf without extra ballast besides people. Anyone surfing behind that boat, if so speed/taps would be appreciated.

2. Balance Point:
When I try to shift my weight to the front of board, I submarine the front. If the board was like standing on a "teeter-totter" where is best position for feet?

3. Where do you point board?
Should I be trying to aim board toward back corner of the boat with the toe edge on the wave keeping me in pocket? Or at the transom...? We all seem to just float out of the wake away from the boat after we have slack and then finally let go of the rope. Any tips/hints on where to focus surfing toward?

4. Speed:
When I watch the videos on uTube, speed looks faster than 10mph. Love to get an idea of speed people surf best at.

4. Anything else:
Looking for the "ah-ha" ideas.

Good news is we will gladly practice on our own, just looking for some coachable moments.

I have a 21i, I put 300lbs under the back seat and 800lbs on the side I wanted to surf on. Great wake. I run between 9.5 and 11. Bigger rides I go slower, smaller rider we go about 11. You will need ballast to get a good wake I would think.

Found this Nick Weineker riding behind a Tige Z1 heard there were no ballast and 5 average size people

http://youtube.com/watch?v=TumBX3f9VqE

Set your taps to 4-6, You need more weight. About 500-750 on the surf side 500-750 in the rear of the boat. Then you may want to experiment with a 100-250 pounds in the bow of the boat. It will take a few attempt, but you will figure it out.

Murph, I have an "05 24V. It's set up specifically for surfing. I have a custom Enzo sack (1,400#)on the port side, and set the taps at 3. Speed at 12.7.
Perfect hip high wake with a curl about 15' back.

Greg,

What tower is that in your profile pic? That thing looks sweet.

You will need ballast.

On mine I run about 1300 pounds of ballast, taps at 5, speed at 10.6.

Also try to keep your toes closer to the toeside edge, leaning into the wave.

Thank Robb. It's the Pro Flight "G Force". I like it because there aren't to many bars to it, but also very stabile. I like the clean look with the arc of the tower.

Whats up Greg....no tower braces?

Come on Dave... You know that the only braces that I need are on my teeth.

We surf our 07 24ve with about 5-600lbs up front and 1k-1.2k lbs on the surf side + peps and another 700lbs on the other side.
Before ballast we were able to drop the rope and surf.
Pics are with above ballast and taps at 7 speed 11-12 mph

WOW! Thats a lot of weight!! Your boat must be fun to steer at cruising speed

big_wave 06-04-2008 6:46 PM

Surprisingly it handles well even with all the weight. We only run about 2000lbs for wakeboarding.
