How does the B52, compare to Calabria, Supra, Tige, in value and build quality in these areas: Hull, vinyl, dash, tower?

rsmith 10-12-2006 11:36 PM

MB is good. I would also say look at Malibu but they are on my s*** list because of pricing for '07. In addition to MB, consider Centurion and Sanger--both build value and quality.

Darin,

My buddy picked one up this summer. Seems to be very good quality. The vinyl is super plush and the whole interior seems really well put together. The dash is a little plain but it is functional. The tower is huge and very tall. The boat is hard to weight correctly and the wake washes a whole lot until you figure out how to load it.
He did have a starter go out in his boat right after he got it. That was a small issue though and it was fixed rather quickly.

The only other issue with his is that the dealer he bought it from in Austin sucks. His perfect pass has never worked properly and even when he asked them to fix it and they had the boat, they told him that they didn't have time and returned it to him.

I am on my third MB since 1998. In my opinion there are very few boats out there that are built as well. In my trade I work and have worked on just about every boat in this class out there. They all have there issues. Mb has the least. MB's attention to detail I think is unmatched.

For what its worth. A local boat mechanic here in town (with no affiliation to any manufactuer) told a buddy of mine who was looking at MC, and BU only, that he should look at MB. Not starting a war, just repeating what was said. He told him MB was the best kept secret in boating, and put together better than any other wakeboat out there.

My suggestion is to go to the manufacturer websites and look at the materials they use, the warranty they offer and how they build the boat. MB uses the thickest vinyl in the business and has the best warranty. The graphics are all in the gelcoat... no stickers to rub off. The hull isn't a "shoebox" fit that a lot of the others use - rather it is a "butt fit" that perfectly mates the hull and deck.
Sure I'm partial to MB's because I own one. All of my friends have other boats, but they all like my wake the best. I have a friend that has Malibu and another that has a Supra, and both boats ride rougher and scoop water over the bow very easily.
I say do the research and be happy with what you got...
If I were to bitch about MB, I would say sometimes the customer service is lacking... When you pay the kind of cash you have to to buy one of these and want an answer... I think you should be able to get it - now. Overall they are all right - when we were designing the boat, I called and spoke with Mike Brendel personally about the options and colors I wanted; try that with MC...

I just bought an '06 B52 V23 Team Edition and I really love it. I had an '02 Supra SSV that I traded, and the interior is much nicer. However, I am comparing an '02 to an '06 and would have to get into an '06 Supra to make a real comparisson.
The wake is completely different than the Supra though. You almost have to wait an extra second before you pop off the wake. Also, I used to ride a 65ft mainline (+ another 5 for the handle). Now I'm out to a 75ft mainline. It took some getting uses to, but makes spinning MUCH easier IMO.
As far as people saying the wake is 'washy' (and I heard that complaint when I was researching these boats), don't believe them. They are most likely going too slow for the full ballast.
The tower is kick-ass. Its HUGE. My only complaint is that its a bitch to collapse. You can do it by yourself, but its not easy. It is definitely a 2-person job.
Here's a few pics:

The interiors look really nice. No snap out carpet though???

boss210 10-14-2006 10:30 AM

centerion is not even in the same class as a MB. Sanger builds a good boat, so dose tige and Malubu. I just prefer the MB.

macgiver 10-14-2006 10:40 AM

Wow, I had one of those(210).Loved it. Leaps and bounds above everything else the year mine was made. 1998

I really like MB boats ive ridden a b23 wake and its incredible, the ride in the boat is just as nice. However there is one thing that just sticks out with every boat i look at and that is the dash. Look at every manufacturer and they all have 100% different driver pods. Take a look at Malibu. A leather wrapped dash a beautiful steering wheel amazing billet gauge housing large backlit switches. To me it just seems that some companies dont spend enough time and money on the dashboard given that you are spending hours looking at it. Its like buying a Bentley for the ride and engine and looks and name and getting all of that with a hugo's interior. Im curious as if people agree or if i am just too picky? thank you

captain_542 10-14-2006 11:39 AM

i also agree with dave keith. ride is superb and no trouble with dipping the nose.

I still love my boo though. i am very happy

hope nobody minds i used their pictures. but just scroll through and take a look at all the different ones there are.

http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=2178

http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=1529

http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=1575

http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=400

http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=1371

http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=2060

http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=1531

http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=1970

http://v094013.dd1936.kasserver.com/gst26.jpg

http://www.samarins.com/autoshow/jaguar_XK_1.jpg

http://domestickidny.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/2007-jaguar-xk-interior-1280x960.jpg

I've had my B52 Team Edition since Sept of 04. I have had only a few minor issues with it. Ballast gauge broke and I had a leak in one of the fittings for my ballast. Both were fixed under warranty without question. Customer service is awesome from both my local dealer and MB. Quality boat hands down. I to have friends with different boats and we always seem to end up on mine. People have said they don't like them but I think it's like the old "Ford vs. Chevy" thing.
Board More/Work Less!
J$

Now that you mention it, I've seen a broken tower from a B52 V23. My dealer said the owner was pulling 5 tubes attached to it.... I wrote it off as a dumb**s issue. Did the factory warranty the towers for you Brandon? If not how much $$$$ was it?

bggonzo 10-16-2006 7:38 PM

The factory did warranty it but it sucks not to have the boat while it is being fixed. They assumed that i was pulling tubes off the tower to but i wasn't. Now they think I have to many speakers, but i think it is just an excuse.
