I think the Clearlake idea is pretty cool provided they can control the water conditions (meaning the chop). This sounds like a good time. Any thoughts?

walt 02-24-2005 8:26 AM

You'd find better water in the SF Bay. Thats not to say Clear Lake is never flat but it wouldn't be my first pick and when the wind comes up it gets really BIG.

thor 02-24-2005 8:59 AM

Where can you find the article or press release that mentions Clear Lake as a possible new site for Boardstock?
I've only been to Clear Lake once before and the time we went it was crowded and the water was rough and full of algae. It took forever to get the scum line off my boat.
I've never camped there before, are there nice campgrounds? We stayed at Konocti Harbor(sp.) in the motel which was pretty cool.

Hated it!!!!

Well at least I have a timeshare on the water with a covered slip right in Konocti. Clear lake is usualy emerald green that time of year.

wakeworld 02-24-2005 10:26 AM

I'm not familiar with Clear Lake, but it looks like they've really stepped up Boardstock this year. The wakeboarding is back. They made it a WWA World Series stop! I think that's huge!

jarrod 02-24-2005 10:34 AM

I agree. They are stepping it up. I also agree that Clear Lake COULD be a bad move. I've never seen it flat. But, people are going to btch no matter where it is.

guido 02-24-2005 10:36 AM

Sounds like a good time. Pretty sure we'll try to be there. I don't know about the water conditions, but anything has got to be better than the way the event was run for the last couple of years. Hopefully this will help weed out the ghetto people from the party scene.

jarrod 02-24-2005 10:40 AM

Yeah, no ghetto in Lake County! Just a ton of W/T cranksters!

walt 02-24-2005 10:42 AM

J-Rod......You beat me to it.

walt 02-24-2005 10:48 AM

Clear Lake is a relatively shallow lake. I will guess that the average depth is around 15 or 20 feet and I believe it's the biggest natural lake in Ca. It's wide open with no fingers to speak of so when the wind comes up the water can get really big.
justsomeguy 02-24-2005 11:01 AM

Lies, all lies.

They call it Clear Lake because the water is so clear. Duh.

zride 02-24-2005 11:28 AM

those pictures don't make Clear Lake very appealing. I have never been to CLear lake and anything sounds better than Tower Park but those pics make me think twice about clear lake. Either way its all good... Clear lake doesn't look to clear!lol take care.

walt 02-24-2005 11:31 AM

I hate when that stuff gets under your eye lid and you can't get it out.

snowdog 02-24-2005 12:04 PM

My good buddy use to have a cabin on clear lake, and IMO it is the nastiest body of water in California. A day in the water and your boats hull will glow nuclear green. Better bring extra cleaning supplies.

guido 02-24-2005 12:59 PM

Nasty... We'll be there for the party, though. Maybe we can sneak up on the cranksters and they wont know were there until we've all left. Oh, well.

ivyrider 02-24-2005 3:06 PM

I vaguely recall someone telling me they put a dye in it to make it appear greener than it is. Not sure of the level of truth to that, but if it is true, the dude shelling out the dye needs to sober up. that's just nasty.

That's just nasty looking. And people say the delta is dirty. That looks a million times worse.

deltaboarder 02-25-2005 8:12 AM

when I went this summer, the water was a reddish color but it was glass for 3 days. I can definately see how it gets choppy though. I already had my dad get our timeshare for 2 of those days

lukeduke95 02-25-2005 10:22 AM

My friend has a cabin up there, we went up for labor day and took my boat. I was rding and my brother was driving into the sun at the time. I fell, and we went to take off and the boat would hardly get up to speed. Finally stopped, and the damn algea was sooo tight around the shaft!. It took like 10 mintues of diving and cutting with a razor to get it all off. Hope the tranny is alright!

The riding wasn't very good, it is too open. But it will be cool if they do have the event there. I hated the Stockton site, and didn't go the last time. I would rather be on the boat than watching from shore.

OH! And my dam trailer looked like swamp thing after we pulled it out of the lake. There was algea growth hanging all over!!!

jarrod 02-25-2005 10:24 AM

Hmmm...I probably won't take my boat.

justsomeguy 02-25-2005 10:33 AM

It's not that bad (stalling boats).

It sounds like Luke hit some shallow spots with weeds to wrap his shaft like that.

We have friends with a house in Buckingham and we go up 6-7 long weekends per Summer. The algae blooms are a surface problem and haven't ever affected the boat. It can get nasty on the surface in spots though as the previous pictures show.

The water is sometimes butter in the early morning but once the lakes gets some activity it's rollers and chop, unless you hit someplace like Rattlesnake (across the lake from Konocti and back in that small bay).

Konocti as a location is going to be rough (just like the bar when it's full of the weekend skank crowd. Awesome people watching though).
aspenshayn 02-25-2005 10:43 AM

was just speaking to someone at konocti and they said it is called clear lake because no matter where you are on the lake you can see all shores clearly! ok?? also the lake is set in volcanic ash so she said that you will never see bottom and is mostly red at all times. the green is mystery. where those pics during st. patty's day?

jarrod 02-25-2005 10:55 AM

"where those pics during st. patty's day?"

Only been to CL a few times. But I've never seen it not green.

justsomeguy 02-25-2005 11:58 AM

"the green is mystery. where those pics during st. patty's day?"

You must be thinking of the Chicago river on St. Patty's day when they used to dump loads of green dye.

The green is not a mystery to folks who have been going to the lake for 15+ years.

Early season the water is colder and you usually don't see big algae blooms. Late season the water is warmer and it's algae time.

The greenie pics above were taken on August 30.

More info here:
http://watershed.co.lake.ca.us/clkinfo/clearlake.html

aspenshayn 02-25-2005 12:25 PM

makes sense. kinda what I thought.

they do the same thing in bay city, MI for St. Patty's day as well.
I didn't think it was dye. I guess I'll get to see for myself in august.
hope to meet some of you there!

ldr 02-25-2005 2:05 PM

My father has been up to clear lake with our boat several times and really enjoyed it. If i remember him correctly, it's pretty windy and choppy in the early summer months but if you go in late August and september it's nice

prior40 02-25-2005 8:12 PM

Konocti is the worst area in Clear Lake as far as chop. The wind picks up at 3 everyday and blows it all out until about 6. During the week though, all you have is glass. The algea problem is only in the late summer months. April - June the lake is never green. I think Lakeport would have been a better choice than Konocti, but Konocti has the resort and theater for concerts.

jarrod 02-25-2005 10:34 PM

so it only gets windy on weekends?

prior40 02-26-2005 1:08 PM

Sorry, let me elaborate, no one is on the lake during the week. Only the weekends. The Lakeport side is usually calm all week excpet for the weekends when you have people on the lake.

02-26-2005 8:30 PM

Why are they not throwing boardstock at don pedro, melonies, or mcclure. All three of those lakes are clean, plenty of camping spots, and almost as easy to get to as stockton...???
