Does the Fish really ride 10cm shorter? How's the ride compared to other boards?

pilot_ryder 06-05-2007 4:20 PM

i have a 129 fish and i "use to" ride a 140 state, i love this board, easy to control tons of fun for screwing around on and amazing manuverability and pop, best pop ive ever had. The only drawback is the edging isnt the greatest but if you already can set your edge properly its an awesome board highly recommend

Thanks for the info. I've been on a 137 Byerly for the last season or so and am ready for a change. I'm 6' ~ 180, what size Fish would you recommend?

closedtoe 06-05-2007 4:29 PM

125 or 129. If your skeptical about going small you may want to try the 129.

the "wizard" on this sight is awsome for getting the size board you need.

I am 5'11 and 165lbs, I been on the 133 for the past 3 seasons, it does not seem to big at all. I would not recomend the 29 for someone your size. Great pop, fast enough, and it lands very soft.

I think the "10cm" thing is a bit of a stretch.

waketwowake 06-05-2007 5:07 PM

I was kind of thinking the 10cm was a bit much myself. Thanks for the responses!

djred123 06-06-2007 11:32 AM

I think it is more like 5cm shorter IMO. I am 5'10 210lbs and ride the 137 Fish. It is a great board. I ride my buddies Legacy 56 and it is about the same width. Get a Fish you will love it.

dcranium 06-06-2007 1:34 PM

I don't know Ryan. I'm 5'9 165 and ride a 129 Fish. I also ride a 138 double up. (so technically I guess it's only a 9 cm difference.) the 129 is supposed to be good up to 200 lbs.

Yeah, riding this past weekend, surface tricks are pretty easy even with fins on (surface 360s).

(Message edited by dcranium on June 06, 2007)

I wonder how many people are still self-sizing their board lengths because "that's what I've always done"? I mean...it seems like all these boards have gotten wider and wider each year, but everyone is "afraid"...or maybe skeptical...of riding a shorter board. I'm 6'1" 185lbs and used to ride an '05 ERA 140, which most people would say is a good "fit". I just bought the '07 Watson 134....and before you go to flaming....I've heard it all before and catch a lot of heat from my own crew. Bottom line is...I love it...and I'm riding better than I ever have (which is nothing to brag about but it makes it more fun for me)...anyway...I think the technology of the boards have changed so I wouldn't be afraid to try the Fish in a 129...you might hate it...but you never know...

I'm 5'11" 200lbs and ride a 133, feels great and doesn't feel too short at all. Now my 143 Team feels too big and i'll probably be getting rid of it soon.

ogopogo 06-06-2007 2:10 PM

Ron,
Scott Owens being 6ft tall prob has longer legs then someone at 5'9. Have you noticed how close to the nose the binders are when they are all the way out? Might not be a big diff for you at 5'9 but scott at 6' will def notice or he will have a very hard time if he wants to ride full width. It does have a little to do with weight (flotation) but more with your height and leg length.

aubuchon03 06-06-2007 2:11 PM

I am 5'7" 160 lbs and rode the 125.
It rode great- a bit slow. However spins are simple, fun pop, and surface tricks are easy as cake. You will have to learn how to edge on it since it does ride different- weight distribution.

watch out when you go back to an original size it'll feel like the titanic.

justinh 06-06-2007 2:34 PM

5-9 155lbs, currently riding the 133 will be switching to 137 soon.

I disagree with the 10cm smaller thing. I think it had more to do with marketing (selling people two boards). If you are looking for a daily driver I would not go too small.

I would recommend the 133 or greater.

ogopogo 06-06-2007 2:45 PM

^^^^ Agreed............ I was thinking about trying a 37 as well.

srh00z 06-06-2007 3:01 PM

I just picked up the 137 and can't wait to ride it. I am 6'4" and around 200, so I went with the bigger size because I like a wide stance.

kiraly_74 06-06-2007 7:11 PM

I ride the 137 fish. I came from a 142 Substance. Im a good 205 if I lay off the dark beer. Well any ways this board has opened alot of doors for me. First the pop is bad---. If you stay on edge all the way up its like jumping on a trampoline never bucks you funny its great. Toes side is a little different just been nailing it the last few times out. Just really got stand on it I guess because the board is so wide. Right know couldnt be happier.

rdhwk10 06-07-2007 7:00 PM

i thought the whole point of the fish was to ride it 10 cm shorter. i'm 6' 185 and ride the 129. i don't think the length is any problem. the only reason for maybe getting a longer fish would be for taller people who like a wider stance. otherwise you might as well get a "regular" board if you're going to get a longer fish. just my opinion.

dcranium 06-07-2007 8:47 PM

OK, everyone! It's all personal preference as well as a LF conspiracy to get everyone to buy more boards...
