church still planning to burn korans on Saturday
|
This numbnut needs to look beyond his self hatred and realize by doing this, he is only exacerbating the problem.
|
Anderson Cooper is such a putz. I think it's preposterous that the argument used is the book burning will endanger American soldiers in Afghanistan. As if they're not already in danger. The opposition wants American soldiers(infidels) dead and nothing we can do, good or bad will change that.
|
Propaganda is a powerful recruiting tool. It's preposterous to think that burning the Quran wouldn't play into the hands of those trying to find ways to inflame hatred against America. What would be the lutz is if a group set up shop across the street and had a good Bible burning on the same day.
|
Are you sure it is Anderson's opinion or is he reporting facts? Below is from yesterdays Wall Street Journal.
"By JULIAN E. BARNES And MATTHEW ROSENBERG KABUL—The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a small Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort. Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians." |

Not saying he's not a putz, but I think Petraeus made the statements, not Anderson Cooper?
|
Right. The two ideas were separated by a period. Anderson was a putz before Petraeus made that preposterous statement. :)
I could have been clearer, sorry. |
and if this was reversed as in someone burning a bunch of Bible's people would be raising hell!
Religious people spreading religious hate. This does no good for anyone. |
Wow! I'm just shocked by the response from US citizens on this subject. So do we have freedom of expression and freedom of religion or not? I get the political aspect of this and needing to apease "the world", but I am ashamed that not one political leader in our country has stood up for this guys right to be an idiot.

Bloomberg did - http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_1...23-503544.html

Thanks Ian, that's essentially what I was trying to say, Bloomberg just said it way better.

The guy is doing it for publicity, plain and simple. He is trying to grow his congregation (I think it is about 30 or so members at the moment), yet the church has a pretty nice website (I investigated it after hearing more about the story the other night). Just about every other religious leader (Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, etc.) has condemned this proposed burning. The guy is an attention whore, and troop endangerment aside, this guy is putting his own life in jeopardy, just as I would suspect that a guy that proposes to burn several copies of the Holy Bible would be putting his own life in danger (there are religious kooks in every branch). Seems like a high price to pay to boost tithings in a church.
Another thing for you guys advocating this burning, do you know who else were big book burners? Communists and Nazis. So you worry that we're on the path to Socialism or Nazism, yet you think it is a good idea to follow one of the key practices? Ian, come on man, denouncing Islam and publicly burning the Koran is not the same thing. |

Ian, there is no slippery slope. If you want to put soldiers in harms way to make a profit your rights are protected. We see this a lot with commercial music that uses lyrics that some would suggest puts cops and women in harms way. I do defend the legal right for this church to burn any book they want. People who do this for profit aren't held to any standards. Only the law. It's pointless to think you could do otherwise, because they make their profit from people who don't give a crap.
But I think that people do hold churches to a higher standard. If anyone should be outraged, it should be other Christians. I have no problem with religious people making fools of their religion. I expect it. Muslims do it and Christians do it. It just goes to illustrate the point that religion really isn't virtuous by nature. If this nation was ruled by the law of whatever brand of Christianity was the most powerful, I have no doubt we'd see human rights abuse here too. The main difference is that Christians have been trained by secular law to respect human rights and Muslims haven't. |
is anyone arguing here that burning Korans is a good thing? I am certainly not. I figured we were all in agreement that it was something that a sane minded person wouldn't do out of basic decency. I certainly wouldn't burn a bible or any other religious book either. If there is the slightest possibility it's putting our troops in harms way then it makes it even worse. I guess I just figured you were arguing that it should be stopped, which seemed to me to go against the beliefs I thought you had based on other posts in the past.

Ian,
Save your time. John loves to hear himself talk and will frequently argue about the things that he argued about. |
There is method to my madness.
|
I really have no idea what's he's trying to accomplish by burning the Qur'an. He says it's to honor the 911 victims. I'm not sure how he views that as honor. I feel like he's doing simply as a retaliation against Muslims and using 'honoring 911' as an excuse, a *** for tat type of thing.
You can legally do it, sir.. we get that..But why would you want to? |
"You can legally do it, sir.. we get that..But why would you want to?"
same reason a mosque can be built two blocks from the former trade center. legally, you are good to go. but its really not a good idea. |
And here lies the inherent problem with religion..... They're all just books. Burning them only has as much meaning as you give it. The printer that created that book will make more.
Do I think it's a good idea.... NO. Why throw fuel on the "figurative" fire. |
I'm thinking maybe this pastor dude is actually a closet extremist Muslim. Media coverage, video, and pictures of a burning Koran would be a great propaganda tool for the Taliban and other extremist Muslims for years to come. It would be a fantastic recruiting tool for suicide bombers and Taliban fighters. If this guy is an undercover extremist Muslim, he's doing a great job.
Otherwise he's just a complete idiot. |
hate breeds hate.
Islam's middle name is "hate". |

Paul, I was not implying that Muslim's were burning the Bible, although that does happen. I was implying that the Bible get's burned all the time including by our own army and there isn't as big of an uproar as some on this board would like to imply. |
It is unfortunate this has gotten all the media attention that it has. It's too bad the media can't collectively agree to ignore idiots like this, but that will never happen. It's a shame that one ignorant insignificant idiot like this can cause so much of an issue and will probably end up getting people killed.

so apparently the burning will not be happening anymore.

^Well,I guess I gotta burn a bible then,or perhaps a flag.
