Hey guys, did you hear the news?
No...what's up?
The new Rebel XTi has a 10.1 megapixel sensor!
OMG!!!!! Whatever will we do?
Hey, I have an idea! Let's stick a 10.2 megapixel sensor in OURS, and call it the D40x!!
SWEET!

I love it. Will we ever get to a point where MPs don't mean a damned thing? What if the external hard drive building people are padding Canon and Nikon's pockets and telling them to make these ridiculously huge sensors so people can snap 100 10.1mp images and fill up their hard drives like...tomorrow. Then they'll need a bigger hard drive to store their neato pictures. I smell conspiracy!

I suspect the 40d will have 10.3 mp's...
What a joke!

the reality is more mp doesn't even necessarily mean better image quality anymore. There are sooo many other components that go into it that people are losing sight of just because they want the latest and greatest with the most mp.

Another reality is that most consumers don't need anything more then 5-6 mp, and even that is really kinda overkill for the photo enthusiast just looking to make 4x6 to 8x10 prints for friends/family and web use.

I agree 200% that the importance of MP is extremely overblown but that D40X is an amazing camera for the price. I'm a hardcore Canon guy but IMO the D40X looks to be the best value under $1000.

I personally like 10mp, I kind of think that's the sweet spot sizewise, big enough to crop but not too hard on storage/processor. I really notice the size of the file when I work with 5D files but the 8 mp 20D files and all the 4mp 1D files I still have seemed kinda small now.

I think the new 1D3 may be the perfect body if it's as light as they claim. (weight was my only beef with the original 1D/1D2)

I can feel my wallet getting ready to float away again. I think I'll just get another 70-200 f2.8L IS, stick it on the 1D3 and live happily ever after.

I noticed B&H still has the original 11mp 1Ds for sale for 4k, it's hard to believe anyone would pay that for a model that old but there are still those that claim 1Ds images have a special look you can't get from the newer bodies (I'm not one of those though)

(Message edited by richd on March 09, 2007)

When the D40 came out a few months ago it was only 6.1mp.
