Fly and drive vacations? any recent experiences?
Anyone familiar with fly and drive vacations?
http://blog.touringplans.com/2011/02...t-can-be-done/ You go out or back in a rental car, and do the other leg of the trip with a one-way flight. I looked at this for a couple of cities. The furthest city from me is either San Diego or Seattle. So I priced things for San Diego. A one-way plane ticket was $177 (plus $20 for a checked bag). That much was good news. But then I checked one-way car rental (for mid- or intermediate size car, ~ Toyota Corolla). Thrifty and Enterprise came in at about $1,650. Hertz was about $1,800. Alamo about $1,950. Are there any tips for getting better car rates? |
Look on CL for someone who's moving and looking for someone to drive their car.

Also you didn't mention when and how long of a trip - I imagine that factors into rental rates?

3 weekends with the 2 business weeks in between. from what I saw, car rental rates for a single weekend are dirt cheap...if you pick-up and return to same airport

any particular month?

I search pickup in St Louis and drop off in San Francisco from Jan 12 - Jan 26 and came up with $50/day... or $54/day for something like a corolla.

what rental car agency? myself and another went through the list we had (hertz-avis-budget-national-alamo-enterprise-thrifty-dollar) and entered the information online and, we came up with the numbers I gave you. then we called Hertz and spoke in person with their customer rep, and she gave us back the same numbers we had before.
I'm not doubting your numbers, I just want to know what you did different. you can pm if you like. yes, I might be interested in those dates. but I'd also like to stay south (I'm trying to swing through some southern destinations like Corpus Christie, Tuscon and Lake Havasu). |
No worries... All I did was go to kayak.com
